Safe, healthy and positive health and weight loss guidance for young teenagers

Methodology

Approaching the issue of self image can be a very delicate topic for young teenagers. There is definitely a right and a wrong. As cliché as it sounds, I think that the most important part of a healthy lifestyle is how we feel about ourselves and so I don’t believe in scales or measuring tapes. My approach is to focus on finding activities that are enjoyable, having a laugh and letting any physical changes follow naturally.

Experience

As someone who spent her teenage years trying to make her way into the dance industry, I know just how eager young teenagers are to gain that ‘perfect figure’ and the social pressures that come with ‘looking good’. I also know the toll that constant dieting can have on a developing mind and, as we’ve all learnt, many of them just don’t work. Up until the age of sixteen, I was putting myself on these crazy diets that were designed for adults. It was only at 17 that I finally learnt how to work with my body in a healthy and productive way. Now at university, as part of my dance training, I look into correct nutrition, exercise and looking after the body. I wish I had someone when I was 13/14 that could have taught me this before I fell down the spiral of fluctuating weights and self consciousness!

Rosie's CV

I am currently in my first year of studying as an undergraduate for a BA (HONS) in Dance Performance at Chichester Conservatoire. I also have three A levels in Physical Education, English Literature and Drama as well as taking part in a Sports Leadership EPQ.

In these sessions, I want to focus on three things, nutrition, exercise and, most importantly, mental well-being and outlook. During the first free session I want to get to know you a little better; how you feel about yourself now, how you want to feel and your personal goals. We will also look into your current lifestyle so that in future sessions, we can find a good balance that is maintainable and will work for you. On top of this, we will also establish with a set of realistic goals so that you will leave feeling good about yourself! You might find that your goals change along the way too because as your attitude toward yourself adapts, you might decide that you want something different out of these sessions.
