About Sally Jo
Music has led me on many exciting journeys throughout my life and nothing brings me more joy than sharing my passion for the violin with others. I have travelled to and performed in many different countries around the world for festivals, theatre concerts and TV shows; I have also performed on recordings of many different styles of music from classical to rock to world music. This diversity of styles has always been an asset in both my performing and teaching.
I started teaching at the age of 15. My viola teacher would pass on to me any students he couldn't fit into his schedule. I realised I had a true passion for teaching so I then went on to work at various music schools in Perth (yes I'm an Aussie!) teaching violin, viola and piano. When I moved to Indonesia, I taught the violin for 10 years to a whole variety of nationalities from age 3 up to age 56. I then taught at the Mick Jagger Centre in Kent, UK for several years where I ran both private lessons as well as group lessons. Now I teach from my home in Woolpit in our lovely cosy music room!

You may be a complete beginner; or you used to learn the violin as a child and would like to pick it up again; or you have a child who is interested in trying out the violin or the viola... Whatever the situation, I am happy to help! I am based just outside Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk. Please feel free to get in touch.
Here's a little info about my teaching style:
My first violin teacher was a great inspiration to me. He was undoubtedly responsible for my love of the instrument. I later changed schools where I found myself learning from a really dull and overly strict teacher! As a result, my interest faded and I begged my parents to let me stop the lessons. They didn't give in and, luckily, we eventually found a new teacher that made learning fun and inspiring again. This difference in teachers made me realise the importance of their role and that if they are having fun and are passionate about what they do, then the student will follow. This is my motivation when I teach and I find that my students want to learn and put in the practice. I have entered many students into ABRSM exams with spectacular results which excites me just as much as it excites my students. I believe in building up confidence through consistent encouragement.
I teach all styles of violin and viola, from classical to folk to rock! For my younger students, I involve a lot of games and we have a lot of fun.
I also love teaching adults - whether you learnt as a child and would like to pick the violin back up again, or you are a complete beginner, I am more than happy to help. These lessons are a fun way to discover / rediscover the instrument with a different musical approach, such as folk or contemporary. Grades aren't important but I am also able to guide you through ABRSM exams if that's the calling.

Perfect! Sally is a great teacher and answered a lot of questions I have been wondering. She has put me on the right path and I will definitely hit her up again when I can.
- First lesson was lots of fun. Although Arvin is fairly new to the violin, he has a great ear for music and shows huge potential on the violin. I look forward to watching his progress!Sally Jo's response :
