About Watosin
Over the 8 years of teaching saxophone, I have found that every student’s journey is unique, and my role is to support their individual musical voice while building a strong technical and theoretical foundation. My lessons begin with essential technical skills such as breath support, embouchure development, finger agility, and rhythmic accuracy—skills that empower students to play with clarity and confidence across genres. I emphasise tone development early, helping students shape their sound through exercises focused on dynamics, articulation, and expressive phrasing. Theory and ear training are integrated naturally into the curriculum, always linked to the music students are working on, whether that be jazz improvisation, classical repertoire, or pop tunes.
Improvisation is a cornerstone of my teaching, encouraging students from all levels to explore simple motifs, rhythmic patterns, and call-and-response exercises that promote creative expression and develop their listening skills. I adapt lessons to fit each student’s goals, whether preparing for auditions, ensemble participation, or personal creative projects. A highlight was working with a student preparing for an advanced jazz programme audition, where we combined focused tone work, repertoire selection, and mock performances to build both skill and confidence. Practice routines and goal setting are a regular part of our sessions, designed to keep students motivated and progressing steadily. Beyond technical skills, I foster an atmosphere where music is joyful, expressive, and empowering. My mission is to help students grow into confident, expressive saxophonists who value both the discipline and the delight of music-making.

My teaching philosophy centres on the idea that music is a language, and the saxophone is a means of communication. I strive to create an environment where students feel empowered to express themselves freely and authentically. This begins with building a solid technical foundation, focusing on aspects like tone production, breath control, and articulation. However, technique is merely a tool; the true goal is to convey emotion and meaning through sound. Ear training is integral to this process. I encourage students to develop their listening skills, to internalise music, and to understand the nuances of harmony and rhythm.
This deep listening informs their playing, allowing them to be more expressive and intentional in their performances. Improvisation is a key component of my teaching. I guide students through the process of creating spontaneous music, helping them understand the structures of jazz and encouraging them to take risks and explore their creativity. We analyse the solos of jazz greats, learning from their phrasing, articulation, and emotional expression. I also incorporate technology into lessons, using tools like recording software and play-along tracks to enhance practice and facilitate self-assessment. Performance is an essential part of musical development, and I provide students with opportunities to perform in a variety of settings, helping them build confidence and stage presence. Ultimately, my goal is to help students find their voice as musicians, to communicate their unique musical ideas, and to share their passion for music with others.
