About Samantha
I am an experienced tutor specializing in writing, English, reading, Language Arts, and literary and poetic critical analysis. I work with a broad range of students, from elementary students to PhD candidates, as well as professional students seeking assistance with career writings. I have an extensive background in writing and editing, and I have a true passion for tutoring students. I am open, honest, positive, kind, detail-oriented, and take pride in giving accurate constructive feedback to drive students to future success. My ultimate goal as a tutor is to foster a sense of confidence in my students, whether that takes a single session or multiple recurring sessions. I want my students to thrive under my tutelage and to thrive in their academic and professional careers as a whole.

I use the Socratic Method when tutoring students. Rather than simply editing my students' writings while they watch, I ask them questions about what they could do to improve or strengthen their work and provide constructive and positive feedback.
A typical lesson plan for an academic student:
- Introductions and brief session goal discussion with the student as well as a run-down of the lesson plan for the session
- Initial review of the draft where I will have the student read their paper out loud to me as I follow along with my own copy.
- Global discussion of the thesis structure and how it conveys the message of the paper
- Review and assessment of the prompt/assignment - I prefer to do this after I have first read the piece so I can identify the proposed topic independently
- Global discussion of supporting paragraphs
- Detailed editing for grammatical accuracy
- Review of citation style for accuracy if applicable - MLA, APA, etc.
- Lesson ends with supportive feedback and strategies for improvement in future papers; schedule additional sessions if necessary, mostly for graduate and PhD theses.
A typical lesson plan for a professional student
- Introductions and brief session goal discussion with the student as well as a run-down of the lesson plan for the session
- Review of the draft - resume or cover letter in conjunction with the relevant job posting if applicable
- Global discussion of the resume or cover letter in terms of its message
- Discussion of leveraging transferrable skills effectively
- Detailed editing for grammatical accuracy and writing clarity with active feedback from the student
- Providing job search resources if the student is seeking guidance in that area
- Lesson ends with supportive feedback and strategies for improvement in future resumes and/or cover letters; schedule future lessons if needed.
