About Barrett

I used to work for the Japanese government in Japan for several years and I also taught in university for many years. I have JLPT1 certification (the highest level of fluency) and over 20 years of teaching experience. In addition to teaching in university, I've taught on a volunteer basis and also tutored high school students and professionals.

About the lesson

I am now semi-retired so I have a flexible schedule and I would love to share my insider knowledge of Japan and East Asia with others!

I can help students with their classwork, or give private and small group lessons on how to communicate in Japanese, or coach people regarding history/culture or travel and business dealings.

I have taught people of all skill levels and can adapt lesson plans to suit a student's needs.

My focus is on helping people to understand Japanese culture so that they can understand how Japanese people think and, thus, how they communicate. Having gone to public school and university in Japan and then worked there for many years, I try to give people an accurate picture of Japanese culture.

You can't ask for a more qualified and knowledgeable Superprof than Barret. I've known him since university; even then, he finished top of the class with honors in Japanese. We both worked in education/international relations in Japan, and his work in Kyushu was exemplary. All of this means that his broad cultural knowledge is based on years of experience and research in Japan. He's even created an original series of textbooks for learning Japanese! I highly recommend Barrett if you are looking for a great teacher with a sense of humor.

Barrett is great and knows his stuff. He'd better, he lived in Japan for a large portion of his life.
