About Joe

Since 2007, I have worked as a professional private tutor, amassing thousands of hours of teaching experience with students across all primary and secondary year groups. I have predominately taught one-to-one in students’ homes (including home-schooling), but also as a specialist literacy and numeracy tutor at the Dyslexia Teaching Centre in Kensington, on various ‘revision booster’ programmes and, increasingly, to students online in the UK and around the world. I have travelled to many different countries with several different families, teaching multiple siblings during school holidays over several years. I co-developed and ran a tutor-training programme for the London Academy of Tutors, including mentoring tutors and providing client support where unique or difficult circumstances arose for our tutors.

In addition to revitalising the confidence and academic success of students struggling with low confidence, or battling SEN, I have successfully assisted students with entry to most of the top independent schools in the UK.

I am currently living in Bali, studying online towards an MA in Dyslexia and Literacy.

I have co-created and run tutor-training programmes, and so have been forced to hone my teaching methods. To summarise, the first important step is assessment. Without knowing a student's level, it is impossible to target the lesson appropriately; if our lesson objectives are too basic then the lesson can be boring, too expert and the lesson is stressful. To get the 'goldilocks' lesson, I need to know what my student knows, and what they find difficult, as well as obviously what the overall aim is. Incremental Learning is a technique I taught to my tutor-students, which described the importance of teaching in increments that are at that perfect level, adding to the student's knowledge, but not confusing or stressing them with too much new information.

Secondly, creating short-, medium- and long-term learning objectives. We will have a learning objective for each session, and it is important that they are manageable - to ensure the satisfying sensation of success - and that they are contributing to the medium- and long-term objectives.

Thirdly, the feedback and review process should be constant and intelligent. I have found that simply asking, 'Did you understand that,' is not enough - too many students will answer yes because they either think they do understand it well enough, or they want to hide that they don't. Short tests within a lesson, and follow-up reviews in subsequent lessons are an important part of the process.

Fourthly, enjoyability is key. Learning is satisfying when there is a feeling of progress and success, but it can be genuinely enjoyable when a lesson is taught with a sense of humour, and a flexibility of approach that ensures a student's specific interests and personality are taken into consideration. There are many fantastic online resources, and I have developed many of my own personal tricks, that help to break up the monotony of book-learning, and make a lesson fun.

I think that's enough for now - well done if you read this far! Please do ask if you're interested in hearing more about the tutor-training course contents.
