About Andy
-I first went to Japan in my early-twenties, studying Japanese every morning and teaching English every evening. I found that you can learn to speak Japanese surprisingly quickly and easily (honest!), and can still remember the excitement I felt when I realised I was having a conversation in Japanese, and not just reading from a phrasebook. I'd love to help you to have this experience too. -I've read dozens of novels in Japanese, I read the news in Japanese every morning, and enjoy reading books on Japanese culture and history. Compared to speaking, reading Japanese IS hard, and I can't pretend it isn’t. But if you’re interested in giving it a try, I hope I can inspire you to see that it is both possible and extremely rewarding. -I passed the JLPT N1 on my first attempt, less than two-and-a-half years after learning my first words of Japanese; I have a BA(2:1) in Japanese from SOAS; and was a finalist in the Japanese Government's Agency for Cultural Affairs' international excellence in translation competition both times I entered. -I've spent most of my working life at Japanese companies, and have lots of experience in using the Japanese language in real-life situations.

*I can help all ages and abilities in reading, writing and speaking Japanese. *I like to teach for 60 minutes at a time. *I can provide written feedback, a summary of points covered, study tips, and suggestions on areas to focus on. *I use a visualiser and whiteboard to demonstrate how to write Japanese (I'm a kanji geek!). *I make a point of reinforcing previously-learned grammar and vocabulary by using it across lessons. *My experience passing the JLPT N1 and as a translator helps me to understand the challenges English speakers face, and allows me to explain subtle nuances in native English.

Andy was recommended to me by a mutual friend, and I'm so glad he was! He is a very kind and thorough teacher. I was in search of a Japanese teacher in preparation for my move to Japan for my new job, and Andy was perfect. He helped me prepare for life in Japan and has given me a lot of insight into the Japanese language. He has always been willing to chat outside of lessons and answer questions I have about Japanese, as well as share his experiences with me, which have been invaluable. His knowledge or kanji and grammar have been really helpful in particular, as these are areas which I think are particularly important for a beginner's understanding of how Japanese operates. I personally felt I needed a lot of help with this, and Andy was always happy to oblige, responding very quickly and with interesting and comprehensive answers to my questions. Andy is also very generous with his time and, in my opinion, if you are looking to start learning Japanese as a beginner, or improve your already existing Japanese as an intermediate or advanced student, it is very much worth taking a few lessons with him. He will no doubt add a lot of insight to your studies, no matter your level of Japanese!
Five months ago, I was moving to Japan and had same basic Japanese language vocabulary but didn't have any grammar or real world application of the language. I signed up for a beginner course where I met Andy as one of the expert teachers. Andy has such a passion for the language and for helping others acquire the skills they need. He has a deep understanding of the Japanese language which allows him to teach through stories and experience which makes the learning stick. I also appreciate how Andy is always willing to answer questions outside of class and stays in touch with his students. I would recommend Andy to anyone trying to get a great command of both reading, writing, or speaking the Japanese language. He's a true pro at what he does and you'll learn a lot from him.
Andy is an excellent teacher who helped me pass JLPT N4. Before we started lessons, my learning progress had stalled and I had become a bit demotivated. Lessons with Andy really helped me progress to the next level - particularly reading, grammar and Kanji. Andy's knowledge and love of Kanji is second to none and his passion for Japanese is infectious!
In my years working with Andy for Japan's equivalent of the BBC, NHK, i found him thoughtful of his audience and his Japanese second to none.
He has a true passion for the language, often harbouring knowledge of it that often surprised and sometimes surpassed the native reporters and correspondents we worked with.
He always enjoyed teaching others the skills that he himself went to great lengths to obtain and was always thoughtful and patient in doing so.
I'm sure anyone employing him will not be disappointed.Andy is honestly the best Japanese tutor I have ever had, he has an incredibly deep knowledge of Japanese, particularly Kanji, and was very helpful to getting me to finally understand how to learn them and all the while making them fun to understand and learn! Along with that his method of teaching grammar and vocabulary were extremely good and fun to take part in! When it comes to conversation it's great to have someone so encouraging when conversing and really helped to boost my skills and confidence which has made my conversation leaps and bounds better than it ever was
I cannot recommend him enough!View more recommendations
