About Johnny
I'm a Law graduate from the University of Southampton. Before that I sat English Literature and Language at A-level and came out with an A*, so these are papers I've done recently rather than a long time ago, and I still remember what the pressure of them actually feels like.
The reason I want to teach this subject is that most students I knew were taught the texts thoroughly and then left to work out the writing on their own. I was one of them for a while. What changed things for me was realising that examiners are rewarding something quite specific and learnable, and once you can see it, the essay stops being a mystery.
I'm patient, I'm organised, and I'll always be clear about what's working in a piece of writing and what would push it higher.

My lessons are for GCSE and A-level students of English Literature and Language who want to lift their grades, particularly in essay-based papers.
Lessons run for one hour online, and each one is built around a specific piece of work rather than general revision. We start with the exam board's mark scheme, because most lost marks come from students not knowing what the examiner is actually rewarding.
From there we work through your text or question together: unpicking what's being asked, planning a structure, and drafting paragraphs that use evidence properly instead of just quoting.
