About Yolanda
I have taught Spanish since 1985 and although specifications have changed with time, my enthusiasm has never withered. In 2016 I had an impromptu visit by a Senior Manager from Surbiton High, who wrote ”I really enjoyed your excellent lesson – the girls were highly engaged and there was a great level of stretch and challenge evident throughout, with target language used brilliantly and passionately. Your delivery was very energetic and the girls really enjoyed being there. (Silas Edmonds)”.
My GCSE results have been consistently higher than the school’s target, even when pupils are taught in a mixed ability class. Last summer’s GCSE results were 80% A*-A and 100% A*-B. I attribute my success to my belief in preparing lessons thoroughly and giving pupils challenging (but achievable) tasks that reflect ability as well as the changes in the new examinations. For the most part the language used in my lessons has been Spanish to encourage the use of the target language and help sentence construction. I have always enjoyed varying the pace of the lessons and using the resources available to add variety. I ensure that numerous examples of the topic at hand are given and check for understanding regularly. I am familiar with a variety of teaching styles, which allows me to pick the most appropriate approach for each lesson, be it group tasks, computer-based tasks, individual creation, expansion of vocabulary etc. In order to help students who needed extra support I instituted clinics to address specific issues and one to one oral topic practice. These tended to be at lunchtime or after school for years 10 and 11 and proved to be popular and very helpful. For A level students, help tended to be during free periods.
On a broader level, I was Head of Sixth Form for 19 years and I oversaw the UCAS applications and gave appropriate training prior to interviews so that students could achieve their full potential. Being Head of Sixth Form was stimulating as it was always new and challenging. In recent years the most demanding aspect of the job was dealing with mental health issues, yet I managed to balance the need to give these pupils support against their need to develop greater skills of resourcefulness and independence and continued to look for ways to enhance these in my role.
In order to succeed in both roles I had to be extremely well organised and displayed excellent time management and interpersonal skills, establishing a good working relationship with members of staff, parents and pupils. As Head of Spanish I had to monitor and keep improving the quality of teaching and learning within the Spanish department, and achieve the highest possible examination results for all students.
