Before I begin teaching a subject, I usually lay out a roadmap for my classes. This includes structuring out the syllabus, laying out the goals that we need to attain in my course, pattern of progress assessments(daily assignments, weekly tests and monthly super tests), etc.
The above protocol is flexible and based on the student's performance and feedback can be changed in a way that suits his/her learning style.
