In mathematics, exercises are, in my opinion, the best method to understand, so you must first understand the formulas and logic and then train on many exercises! For French, I start by explaining the function of words, their grammatical category, while studying the conjugation. Then you have to do exercises like dictations, conjugations of different verbs, etc. In English, listening is in my opinion the best method to progress. I insist on oral comprehension and study alongside grammar rules, rules on tenses and modes that must be used.
