Teaching is something that I love. Influencing and inspiring my students to play and enjoy music gives me great pride.
With expertise in many different styles including Rock, Metal, Pop, New Orleans, Latin, Small-Band Jazz, Big Band Jazz, Classical, (and many more) I can feed my students' minds with knowledge they desire.
The aspirations of each student can vary greatly. They may want to learn their favourite songs, progress through the graded examination systems, to learn how to read play percussion, play in a marching band etc.
As a result of these variations, the topic of study changes from student to student.
However, I do employ a few aspects of drumming to teach to every student.
These include:
- Stretching exercises
- Metronome practise
- Ear training
- Technique
- Reading (at least a basic understanding) & counting
- Rudiments
All of these are essentials in becoming a good drummer and when tied together, allow you to learn and play anything you want.
Practise is key
Persistence is key
But overall, having fun is the most important!
I have played in many bands throughout the years and have gigged countless gigs throughout the UK and Europe.
Being able to teach what I know and love to my students is just amazing.
Many of my students have been private but I have also taught in schools and now online. Some of them have gone on to pass graded examinations, pass auditions to join bands, be included in school music performances etc.
Some examples of my teaching history are as follows:
- Private drum kit and percussion tuition.
- Drum teacher for ‘Open 2 Music’ (primary school tuition).
- Tutor for ‘LCCM Beginner’s Drum Course’.
- Tutor at LCCM Drumline.
- Assistant tutor at 'Morley College Jazz Summer School' with Pianist, composer Roland Perrin.

Hi, nice to meet you, I'm Tom.
Teaching drums is something that I love because of the positive influence and inspiration it gives my students. It's so nice to see when my students achieve their aims and enjoy playing music music.
The aspirations of each student vary greatly from learning their favourite songs,
progressing through the grade systems, to learning how to read classical
percussion scores and play percussion.
With different musical directions being presented by students, I constantly adapt
my knowledge to best suit a student's needs.Being a self employed music tutor
requires a high level of self motivation and drive to achieve. I have had to manage
both my time and resources effectively to ensure that my performance is at it’s
best. This work approach enables my students to achieve their highest potential
going on to complete graded examinations, play at their school performances,
have success at auditions for entering band etc.
Here's a bit about me:
Having been involved in music since an early age I am familiar with a wide range of genres including rock, funk, soul, jazz, pop, latin etc.
I graduated with a 1st Class Degree in ‘Music Performance and Production’ from the London Centre of Contemporary Music (LCCM). I was previously awarded a scholarship and full acceptance to study at Berklee College of Music, Boston, but resided in London as the tuition fees were out of reach.
LCCM has given me the opportunity to study under ‘UK Jazz Legend’ Pete Cater for 3 years and also drummer Richard Brook (ABC, Gary Barlow, Annie Lennox).
I have also studied with many of the top drummers in the industry today.
Some names include: Steve White (Paul Weller, The Style Council), Craig Blundell (Frost*, Steven Wilson), Ralph Salmins (Van Morrison, Robbie Williams, The Waterboys), Ian Matthews (Kasabian), Ash Soan (Cher, Seal, Robbie Williams, Billy Idol, Adele) etc.
The knowledge and experience I have gained so far allows me to teach all styles, all abilities and work to meet the needs of my student. I can also prepare students for Trinity or Rockschool graded drum exams if requested.
I will provide all the appropriate material needed and offer advice to help students improve the aspects of drumming they want to improve. From there we will set short term goals and evaluate their progress as time goes on. I have endorsed this method of practise for years and I feel it is the quickest and most rewarding way to gain knowledge and become a better musician.
If you're looking to improve your drumming, whatever level you may currently be, then look no further--Tom is your man! I've had the privilege of taking drum lessons with Tom for over 4 years now and every lesson is as exciting and engaging as when he first helped me pick up a pair of sticks. The breadth of his expertise seems to have no limits-- he has taught me songs from a great variety of genres along with more technical aspects and that have helped progress my playing immeasurably. He has also helped me a great deal with music theory which I had previously struggled with before Tom's lessons but he's since helped me make it feel like a breeze! Always accommodating, he thoughtfully caters his lessons to my desired directions whilst still finding creative ways to challenge my playing along the way. He's patient, knowledgable, communicative, enthusiastic, and above all an incredible musician and mentor. Not to mention he's got a great sense of humour and puts you at ease from minute 1. Top tutor and top man!
Thomas has been a fantastic teacher for my 7 year old. I didn’t expect remote lessons to work so well! He is always professional and friendly! We are all very happy with him as our son seems to be enjoying drumming away!
Lessons online with Tom are fantastic. His knowledge of both music and the drums is second to none and he delivers his tuition in a very understandable way. Thoroughly enjoyable lessons, I highly recommend him.
Tom has been an exceptional drum tutor and has really helped me improve my musicality and professionalism behind the kit.
My love for music has improved immensely over the course of our lessons and he has also introduced me to a plethora of new artists, musicians and genres.
Tom would be my go to Drum Tutor, for beginners and experienced drummers alike.
