Product/Industrial Designer – May 2017.
I teach undergraduate Bachelor’s degree level Product/Industrial Design, to include both technical (BSc) and creative (BA) variants of the subject. Subjects taught within the profession have included all aspects of the Product Design-Development Cycle, such as; Design Techniques and Integration, User-Centred Design, 3D Design Modelling/Prototyping, Materials and Manufacturing in Design, plus Design History and Creativity.
My university lessons and seminars have gained praise in the past from the students that I have taught, plus respected people and organisations (both within industry and academia). This referred to their clarity of presentation and relevance of detail. I like to present and pass on my learning in person, with interesting and creative graphics, visuals and practical demonstrations, (PowerPoint or similar, visits, plus with the use and demonstration of ‘hands-on’ design preparation, modeling and finishing of prototypes and functional models, etc). In this way, I have found that the amount of depth and excitement of information being taught is more easily understood, passed on and remembered.
I like to interact with all my students and build a good rapport. Where possible and relevant; I will use my career contacts and contemporary ongoing integral interest for the profession and industry, to involve design and technical businesses to provide worthwhile teaching examples.
I feel that I offer any student a cost-effective but alternative, valid and credible source of technical design learning.
Hello, my career background to date has included being both a BSc Hons (1st Class) Product Design Engineer with nearly ten years of Design Engineering Industry experience with several companies (see CV), plus a similar amount of time spent more recently teaching the subject at a major university in Sussex, (see CV).
Student cohort sizes that I have taught have ranged from 20 to 30, plus I have carried out numerous individual tutorials within the subject. Whilst teaching at the university all my assigned students attained either first class or 2.1 graded degrees.
Hello, I am a BSc Hons (1st Class) Product Design Engineer with nearly ten years of Design Engineering Industry experience with several companies, (see CV). I have design accreditation as a member of the Institution of Engineering Designers, (MIED), plus a teaching qualification as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). In design; I am proficient with using several of the current CAD based programmes and software, including Solidworks 3D CAD.
In addition to the Design Industry experience, I have more recently spent a similar amount of time teaching the subject at a major university in Sussex, (see CV).
To supplement my design teaching, I sometimes draw on my first profession as a qualified Mechanical Aeronautical Engineering technician, both on helicopters and large fixed-wing commercial airliners.
