About Akili
Who I am
My name is Akili. I am a medical microbiologist and epidemiologist with two Master's degrees – one from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. For over 15 years, I have worked in hospitals, laboratories, and national public health teams, helping to stop outbreaks and fight infectious diseases. But my first love has always been teaching.
Why I want to teach
I teach because I believe science should be exciting, not intimidating. I remember being a student who sometimes struggled to connect textbook diagrams to the real world. Then I had a teacher who showed me a microscope slide of a real malaria parasite – and everything clicked. That moment changed my life.
Now, I want to be that teacher for you.
I have taught over 1,000 students – from teenagers in classrooms to nurses in training. I have seen how one small "aha!" moment can turn fear into curiosity and confusion into confidence. I don't just want you to pass exams (though we will work hard for that). I want you to see how biology, chemistry, and physics explain the world around you – from why we wash our hands to how vaccines work.
What you can expect from me
Patience – I will never rush you or make you feel small for asking questions.
Real stories – I bring actual case studies from my work (outbreaks, lab discoveries, public health mysteries) to make science unforgettable.
High standards – I will push you to think like a scientist, not just memorise facts.
I am here to help you succeed – on your terms, at your pace, with a smile and a genuine belief that you can do this.
Let's learn together.

My Tutoring Approach – Akili
My Teaching Methodology
I believe science is best learnt by doing, questioning, and connecting.
My approach blends three core techniques:
Concrete to abstract – I start with real-world examples (a COVID-19 outbreak, antibiotic resistance, a chemical reaction in the lab) then build towards the scientific theory. This helps students see why science matters before mastering the details.
Active recall and spaced practice – Each lesson begins with 5 quick-fire questions from previous sessions. I use mini-whiteboards, verbal quizzes, and low-stakes tests to cement long-term memory – not just cramming.
Practical demonstration first – Wherever possible, I show a lab technique, a microscopic image, or a data set. We analyse it together. Then I guide the student to explain the underlying biology, chemistry, or physics. This builds both confidence and deep understanding.
Adaptive pacing – I assess each student's starting point in the first session. Some need foundational work (e.g., cell structure, balancing equations); others need exam technique and problem-solving. I tailor every lesson accordingly.
Exam technique embedded – For GCSE and A Level students, I weave past paper questions into every session. I teach students how to decode command words, structure answers, and avoid common mistakes – not just content.
Typical Lesson Length
Standard session: 60 minutes – ideal for focused topic revision, homework support, or exam practice.
Extended session: 90 minutes – used for mock exam walkthroughs, full practical write-ups, or bridging multiple topics (e.g., infection + immunity + treatment).
Short booster: 30 minutes – available for quick recall drills or last-minute exam confidence checks.
I am flexible based on the student's age, attention span, and goals.
My Qualifications & Experience as a Tutor
MSc in Epidemiology – London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (UK)
MSc in Microbiology & Immunology – Muhimbili University (Tanzania)
Diploma in Health Personnel Education – Certified teacher training (instructional methods, curriculum design, student assessment)
BSc in Health Laboratory Sciences – Strong foundation in Biology, Chemistry, and practical science
Over 14 years of teaching experience – Lectured undergraduate and master's students, mentored 500+ healthcare workers, and taught 1,000+ students in classroom and one-to-one settings
Published researcher – Author of peer-reviewed papers on infectious diseases, diagnostics, and public health – bringing real scientific literacy to my tutoring
I am not a fresh graduate with no classroom experience. I have designed curricula, led practical labs, assessed student work, and adapted teaching for diverse learners – including those who struggle with English as an additional language.
Who the Lessons Are For
Level Age Subjects Focus
Key Stage 3 (KS3) 11–14 General Science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics) Building curiosity, foundational knowledge, practical skills
GCSE 14–16 Combined Science, Triple Science (Biology specialism, Chemistry, Physics) Exam technique, required practicals, grade improvement
A-Level 16–18 Biology (especially microbiology, immunology, disease, genetics), Chemistry (basics to intermediate), Physics (data analysis, scientific method) Deep conceptual understanding, essay/long answer skills, exam readiness
Adult learners / Access to HE 19+ Science modules, study skills, data interpretation Career changers, mature students returning to education
I do not tutor primary level (under 11) or very advanced university-level biochemistry beyond A Level.
A Typical 60-Minute Lesson Structure
Time Activity
0–5 mins Quick-fire recall (5 questions from last lesson)
5–15 mins Real-world hook + key concept introduction (diagram, video still, data table)
15–40 mins Guided practice – we work through problems, diagrams, or past paper questions together
40–50 mins Independent practice – student attempts questions alone while I observe and prompt
50–55 mins Review answers + correct misconceptions
55–60 mins Set homework + preview next topic
For 90-minute lessons, I add a 15-minute practical simulation (e.g., interpreting a microscopy image, designing an experiment, analysing a scientific paper) and a 10-minute exam question write-up under timed conditions.
What Makes My Tutoring Different
Real-world scientist – I have worked in national outbreak response, antimicrobial resistance policy, and hospital microbiology labs. I bring authentic case studies (e.g., a real Marburg virus contact tracing example) that make science unforgettable.
Visa-secure in the UK – I hold a Spouse Dependent Visa with full work rights, so I am reliable, long-term, and need no sponsorship – giving parents and schools peace of mind.
English-fluent with international experience – I have taught students whose first language is not English. I explain clearly, repeat without patronising, and use visual aids effectively.
