It's easiest for me when I know some basics of the learner's native language. I can identify the problematic areas and would know how to tackle them smoothly. However, in other cases, the use of French to teach French from the very beginning helps establish a thought process in the learner that is in French rather than their native language. Lots of group or individual activities and short assignments go a long way in creating deep and long-term learning for learners.
