About Joseph
When it comes to philosophy and religious studies, it is crucial not only that the student memorizes other peoples arguments, but that they understand these arguments, what they are worth, how they might be disputed, &c. I encourage my students to think critically and carefully about arguments and to understand the general principles behind philosophical reasoning. I do not tell my students what to think - I tell them how to think clearly. Sometimes this involves pointing out fallacies, looking at the logical structure behind an argument or probing assumptions. I have taught an after school philosophy class for students studying for their AQA Philosophy A-Level. In these classes students were encouraged to debate the issue with each other in an open atmosphere. I recognize that students only acquire the confidence to say what they really think when they feel they are listened to, so maintaining a respectful atmosphere in the classroom was of paramount importance. I have also taught English in Russia to pupils of all ages and abilities, so I am very prepared for dealing with misunderstandings! There I used a huge number of different techniques to help the students learn new words, grasp complex grammar points and to grow in confidence: we played games, drew pictures, role-played scenarious, &c. I have a personal passion for philosophy, run a website dedicated to logical argumentation and I try not to argue too much with my friends and family.
