About Chiara

Hi there!
So, here's a little bit about me: I am a native British English speaker who, for the past four years has been travelling around Switzerland, Germany and Italy teaching and helping in the devolopment of English language skills in young learners and their parents. During this time I was an au pair for various families with children aged three to eleven (at one point I even had three little ones to keep up with during the pandemic!) My experiences in aiding the children with their language development have truly been some of the most rewarding in my life, and it is my hope that I can continue to create these learning experiences for my future learners.

As an au pair, I not only aided in the English language skills of the children, but also the parents of said children as a group immersion experience. Therefore I have no preference as to whom I teach - if you're ready to learn, I'm ready to teach!

Prior to my experiences as an au pair, I was employed as a Teaching Assistant for learners with Special Educational Needs, a role which demanded a significant amount of patience, compassion and understanding. It is through this experience that I really began to comprehend the rates at which people may learn and what can be seen as progress on an individual learning basis.

With regards to my qualifications, I have previously completed a 150 hour TEFL course, completed an NVQ Level 2 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools, and I have recently graduated from The Open University with a BA (Hons) English Literature. Due to my travels I have studied up to level B2 German and B1 Italian, and though I have yet to sit exams for these languages I would aim to do so as I continue my own language learning journey.

I would like to offer the option of speaking practice for anyone from levels pre-A1 and above, and for children from the age of 6 and above. I am also able to offer practice for adults.

My main objective in the first session is to gauge your approximate level and identify where you may be with regards to the CEFR levels. From this point, I can work to tailor each conversation so that we may work on any problem areas, or revise particular items of vocabulary or grammar. I also have experience in teaching phonics, usually for young children, which aids in the pronunciation of words in the English language from a written source. Essentially, I allow my student to be my guide and we work together to establish what the student needs, and work together to meet those needs.

Typically for a speaking session, I would recommend an hour per session to allow time to revise anything from the previous lesson, as well as target the content required.

When it comes to speaking in English, I like to have my students feel at ease, and therefore I think it is important for all of us to dress as we are comfortable, and address each other as we feel most comfortable. Essentially, I like to think of the learning relationship not so much as that of one between student and teacher, but rather as one between two friends talking over a cup of coffee. My overall aim is to provide a positive, warm and welcoming environment for any who wish to learn.
