Teresa - Mytchett and Deepcut - Piano

Methodology

I am a well-qualified and experienced teacher of piano and music theory, whose pupils enjoy much success in ABRSM exams and music festivals or play simply for the joy of music.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Piano and Theory of music to grade 8 level.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a B.Mus., Honours degree from University College Cardiff and a PGCE teaching qualification (Music main subject; French subsidiary). also from UCC.
I also have an LTCL performer's diploma in piano playing from Trinity College, London.
I am a registered private teacher with the ISM (Incorporated Society of Musicians.

- How much do you charge?

2017 tuition fees are £34.00 per hour. Fees are charged at £170 for ten 30-minute lessons at the first lesson, or pro rata for 45 or 60 minute lessons. Where 45 or 60 minute lessons are taken or if I teach more than one person in a family, I charge for five lessons at a time - payable at lessons 1 and 6 of each 10-week Series.

- Where do you teach?

I teach in my own home in Mytchett, on the Surrey / Hampshire border. It is two miles from Farnborough, Hampshire and four miles from Camberley, Surrey. Students travel from Fleet, Farnham, Aldershot, Bagshot, Lightwater and from the Berkshire border, to have lessons with me.

- When are you available?

I teach children on weekdays after school and adults at other times eg Friday mornings, weekday evenings etc as mutually convenient.
I take a summer break of 5-6 weeks, with 2 wks at Xmas and Easter and a week at half terms, which coincides broadly with the Surrey academic terms.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

5 years to adult. With younger pupils, eg 5 and 6 year olds, I do a five-week trial to see if they are ready to start. If all goes well, I do a further 5-week trial, to make sure the pupil, parent / carer and I are happy to continue.
I teach beginners to grade 8 level. Some students wish to work towards practical and music theory exams or take lessons because they are studying music at GCSE or A level. Others may wish to learn the piano for the pleasure of being able to play eg adults either starting the piano or returning to it after many years break.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

ABRSM practical and theory exams. Preparation towards GCSE and A level practical studies / examination, some with a view to continuing their musical education at university or music college / conservatoire Some adults learn as part of their open university studies.

- Do you have a personal message for students?

I am a teacher who cares about my students, as well as the subject I teach. I am patient, encouraging and sympathetic. Many of my students stay with me for many years. I aim to give a thorough grounding in musical technique. My main interest is in classical music, though I teach pieces in a wide variety of styles, incl jazz and popular styles.

Background

- What kind of experience do you have?

I was a secondary school teacher for 12 years, and have been teaching the piano and music theory privately since 1986.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

I had a CRB Enhanced disclosure certificate (as I work on a one-to-one basis with children) when I was working as a peripatetic teacher in Surrey, which showed that I am a suitable person to teach in this capacity. This has now expired, but I intend to apply for a new one through the ISM. They can do this on my behalf, since I am a registered private tutor with them.

- Where and with whom did you train?

University College Cardiff (B.Mus degree and PGCE).
I have also continued with private piano lessons and attend other music study days and courses.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am an ISM (Incorporated Society of Musicians) registered private teacher.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

I teach a wide range of students from children of primary and secondary school ages. I also teach a number of adults of all ages, some of whom started as beginners with me, others who learnt as children, gave it up and wished to return to it in later life.
