About Barry
I’m an experienced English tutor with a professional background that spans more than 34 years in high‑level communication, interviewing, training, and behavioural analysis. After a long career as a National Retail Loss Prevention Coordinator/Investigator, I shifted my focus to education earning my TESOL Certification in Melbourne in 2009 and relocating to Vietnam in 2013 to teach English full‑time between 2013-2017.
For over a decade I’ve specialised in helping Vietnamese and other nationality learners build confidence and real‑world communication skills. My teaching focuses on:
Clear pronunciation
Listening and speaking confidence
Workplace and Business English
IELTS preparation
Practical communication for study, work, and migration
I currently tutor Vietnamese students online and volunteer with the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) in Victoria, supporting new arrivals as they build the language skills needed for life in Australia.
In January 2026, I completed the TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment through Federation University/TAFE Ballarat strengthening my ability to design effective lessons, assess learner needs, and deliver training that is clear, structured, and supportive.
My teaching style is friendly, patient, and highly practical. I understand the challenges learners face, and I tailor every lesson to build confidence step by step. Whether you want to improve pronunciation, prepare for IELTS, or communicate more effectively at work, I’ll help you get there.

My teaching approach is firmly grounded in established TESOL methodology, which provides a strong foundation for introducing new vocabulary, pronunciation patterns, and communication skills even to complete beginners. Using this method, I routinely teach 3–4 new words per lesson to learners of all ages.
While TESOL forms the core of my practice, my methodology has been enriched by years of hands‑on experience in Vietnam, collaboration with local ESL teachers, and continuous refinement through real classroom challenges. This blend of formal training and practical insight has shaped a teaching style that is structured, effective, and culturally responsive.
During my time in Ho Chi Minh City, I was honoured to be invited annually as a Guest Judge for the prestigious 'Universities Have Got English Talent' competitions a recognition of my expertise and contribution to English education in Vietnam.
Today, my primary focus areas are Pronunciation, Communication Skills, and Business English, helping learners build confidence and clarity in real‑world situations.

I had the opportunity to study with teacher Barry when he was in Vietnam 2 years ago. I was shy and scared to speak English in my first class because my pronunciation was not clear.
