Tim - London Fields - Jazz Improvisation

Methodology

I am a professional double bass player, and perform worldwide. My passion is for jazz, but I have experience in many kinds of music and enjoy helping pupils to discover their own voice on a wonderful instrument.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Double bass, with an emphasis on jazz and popular/world music. I do not teach classical music.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I graduated with distinction from the M(Mus) in Jazz Performance at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, subsequent to a BA (Hons) in Philosophy at Cambridge University. My ensemble won the inaugural Guildhall Jazz Prize (and the accolade of Audience Favourite).

- How much do you charge?

I charge 35 pounds an hour; plus 10 pounds if I travel to the student's home.

- Where do you teach?

I am happy to teach either from home or at the home of the student.

- When are you available?

I am available at all times of the week, although lessons may need to be arranged around my performance schedule.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach all ages and abilities.

Experience

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have performed on many of the most significant stages in Britain and internationally, including the Barbican, the Royal Festival Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, Cologne Philharmonic, Gulbenkian Grande Auditorium Lisbon, and many others. I have toured worldwide with the Israeli world music star, Yasmin Levy, and play widely on the London jazz scene at venues such as the Vortex, Ronnie Scott's and the 606.

My teaching experience includes individual pupils, and tutoring at prestigious summer schools including Glamorgan, Roujan (France) and La Coruna (Spain).

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

No, but I do have an ACPO (Association of Chief Police Officers) Police Certificate, which discloses the same information.

- Where and with whom did you train?

I have studied with Martin Speake, Nikki Iles, Steve Watts and Jeff Clyne. I have attended masterclasses given by John Pattitucci, Julian Arguelles, Liam Noble, Tom Rainey and many others.

Tim is an incredible teacher. He is everything a student could want; an incredible double bass player, great listener, kind, calm and knowledgeable. If you’re looking for a bass teacher look no further!

He is great at explaining and teaching how a jazz standard is composed and played. As well as explaining its historical significance and place in jazz history.

I have been taking double bass lessons with TIm for about 5/6 years.

I would highly recommend Tim as a teacher, he is incredibly competent and knowledgeable, both on the instrument and on jazz theory in general.
Our lessons have been always well organized, working our way through technique, tunes, transcription, jazz language and hear training.

Highly recommended!
