About Timothy
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have two years experience of teaching GCSE up to degree level. I also mentored AS-level Mathematics during my studies.
Throughout two years of private tuition, I encourage students to use their initiative wherever possible. Allowing them to articulate their ideas about the material demonstrates their understanding and instills in them a sense of self-belief and confidence to tackle new challenges. Across varying abilities, I have developed different methods that come from tapping into students' individual talents and utilising them to solve problems together. Lesson structures are tailored to fit the needs of the students; they may involve revision techniques/games that will really pay off come exam time, or a steady progression through the curriculum. This approach is modelled on the Cambridge tutorial system and has proven to yield strong results.
In addition to this experience, I have been acting as a visiting tutor at the University of Nottingham for BArch Architecture, involving one-to-one tutorials discussing the theory, sociopolitical context and design problem-solving of the students' ongoing projects. This means adapting to wide variety of themes, and developing the students' initiatives to make each project their own as well as advising and guiding them through making, presentation techniques and various software methods.

Timothy has recently been tutoring A Level physics for one of our students. The student is progressing well in her studies and is now on course to achieve an A. Timothy's teaching ability is especially impressive in this instance, as the student he has been teaching is from mainland China and is not fluent in English. The student's parents have been particularly impressed by his patience in helping a non-native speaker begin to master complicated content in a language with which she is still largely unfamiliar. They have expressed the highest praise for his ingenuity in finding various ways to explain a particular point when the student's current lack of fluency in English results in her not being able to understand the initial point. From both the parents and Cambridge Star Education Ltd. Timothy comes highly recommended; a really great tutor!
I am a maths teacher in a school in East London. Tim is employed by the school as a tutor. I am very fortunate that Tim was placed to support my class of year 11 GCSE pupils, tutoring the two pupils in my class who were not on track to achieve their target grade.
Tim has had an extremely positive effect on the the pupils he has tutored, both in terms of their attitude and mathematical understanding. His subject knowledge is significantly better than most tutors - few tutors truly know the GCSE syllabus in depth like a teacher would, but Tim uses his understanding of how the marks are awarded to help the pupils score every possible mark.
He also has a remarkable ability to explain concepts to pupils and develop their understanding using very clear language and diagrams / visual prompts.
Lastly, Tim has developed a wonderful rapport with the pupils he tutors - some of whom can be very challenging in their behaviour and apathetic towards maths. He has motivated the pupils to be more independent and most importantly develop a love of maths!Tim did an excellent job of tutoring our son in the required Maths, Science and English needed for his entrance exams. He kept him engaged throughout their lessons, gave him a great deal of confidence in these subjects and was always personable and reliable. I would absolutely recommend Tim to others (and have done!)
Tim inspired an interest in me in maths that I had never otherwise had. He is a very bright person all round and his desire to learn encouraged mine. He created a sense of enjoyment using learning games throughout the lesson as well as taking an interest in me. I would highly recommend Tim as a tutor for the reason that aside from helping me achieve results, he clearly cares and is committed to the progression of his students.
Tim has built upon my existing knowledge of design and taken it to a whole new level. He has explained principles of structure, cladding, services etc in a simple and easily understandable way, and we've applied them in a new design project over several months. He taught me Microstation v8i, and how to render and present my work. This has improved my portfolio so much that I got a job! Thank you Tim!
Despite having only graduated from the course last July, we invited Tim back as a regular guest critic, and he has become a very valuable member of our team. His contribution has been excellent, not only in terms of empathy, and an ability to connect and help our students in terms of design and presentation; moreover Tim's ability to offer rigorous theoretical guidance and reference material has helped to imbue our students with an appropriate sensibility for a career in architecture.
