About Izzie
I have just completed my first year at Loughborough University, studying BA English Literature. I have a great love for my subject and aim to inspire the same passion within students. Having taken my GCSE and A Level exams recently (in 2017 and 2019 respectively) and achieving 9s / A* grades across the board, I have had first-hand experience at sitting the reformed exams. I therefore have many tips and tricks on how to succeed, for example how to write an A* grade essay and ensure you meet each learning objective, and I am excited to share these with current students. I still have all of my notes and essays from GCSE and A Level and so will be able to teach each of the set texts with confidence. I am also happy to teach the Creative Writing component of the GCSE English Language exam, having taken a module in Creative Writing this year at University.
Outside of the classroom, I am currently the elected Media Rep for Faraday Hall at Loughborough University, and have contributed to my Student’s Union magazine, Label. I also am a member of Loughborough Univeristy’s Enactus project, with my social enterprise group EFG running sessions to KS3/4 students with the aim of teaching them soft skills. Before I went to University, I also was a Pre-Sessional Assistant last summer at my sixth form for a week to help settle international students into studying in England. In terms of my hobbies, aside from being an active netballer, I spend a lot of my free time reading, whether this be novels, poetry or non-fiction... so it’s safe to say that I adore my subject!

My teaching methods emulate those of my fantastic secondary school teachers - to help students construct concise and informative essays which will enable them to achieve top grades.
We will first discuss the student’s individual aims and what texts they are studying, and I will tailor the teaching to fit whichever novel, play or poem they are studying. The next step I will take is ensuring that the student understands the general meaning of the text through discussion and annotation. We will then go back through the text as consolidation and also to make a quote bank, picking out key quotations which will refer to when planning our essays - I did this for my texts and it made finding useful quotations so much easier than sitting through the entire text. Following this, we will explore the important themes, characters, and relationships within each text through a range of different techniques, such as analysis of personally selected passages, creating mind maps, or exploring extra reading materials which will increase contextual knowledge. As our key exam preparation, we will then make concise essay plans based upon potential exam questions incorporating all of this knowledge. Throughout this entire journey, we will be creating revision resources which will be vital when it comes to preparing for the final exams.
For A Level students especially, I will also make sure to include close language analysis, contextual information on the text’s socio-political background, critical interpretations, knowledge of formal and generic conventions, and links to wider reading within my teaching - all key components in hitting the top AOs and achieving top grades.
Most importantly, I will aim through my teaching to instil within the student my passion and love for the subject and try to make their learning experience both less stressful and more rewarding.
