About the lesson
I believe any kind of study should be driven by the pupil's interests and needs and guided by the teacher, so I am very flexible in running lessons. I can provide extra support for your current schoolwork, devise a personal programme to work on weaker areas or help you practice your spoken French (or a combination of the three!)
I believe that a good understanding of grammar is key to being able to use a language - as opposed to learning and repeating stock phrases - so I'm always keen to work on this if it could be of use to you. I try to break grammar points down to the basics and explain them in a straightforward way to demystify them; grammar can sometimes seem intimidating at first glance but approached the right way anyone can get their head around it!
Hello! I'm Matt and I'm a part-time Masters student at the University of Bristol. My love for foreign languages began when I first started learning French in secondary school.
Since then I've achieved a 2.i degree in French and German at the University of Cambridge, spent a year living and working in Paris and another working as a Language Assistant at The Skinners' School, a top grammar school in Kent.
At Skinners' I taught GCSE and A-Level pupils French and German and I can easily adapt my teaching towards these exams, having achieved A*s in A-Level and GCSE French and German myself. (Remembering of course that there is much more to learning a language than passing tests..!)
I have kept up with changes to the format and grading of GCSEs and A-Levels through my past couple of years' tutoring.
I also offer mock interviews for applications to languages degrees at Oxford and Cambridge.
A first trial lesson is free with no obligation to continue so don't hesitate to get in touch!
Matt is a very down to earth and sensible person with a broad range of knowledge of French and very good, fluid pronunciation and general speech. On top of that he is very relaxed and so it is easy to speak with more confidence to him. Furthermore all the speaking topics are relevant to the course and useful in terms of grammar and vocab, for instance.
Matt tutored my daughter for her French GCSE. Not only did she get a "8" but she also went from not enjoying French to loving it. Matt was always very professional, well-prepared and had a lovely way of working with my daughter.
