About Alastair
Have an Hons BSc in computing. Worked for several years as a programmer within a stock exchange market maker, mostly on their accounting systems. Worked for a couple of years with medical statistics. Also lectured and ran programming tutorials for many years. Lecturing first and second year computing undergraduates to groups of over 100 students. These were complemented with tutorials involved around 15 students.

Programming is an area where a student needs to learn to create and construct programs from a specification or idea. My approach involves listening and observing to a student to find gaps in their understanding and then step back to build student knowledge so that the gaps fade away. At times students struggle with bugs and need someone to ask the student questions until they solve their own problem. There is an art to supporting a student who on the edge of giving up; without doing their work for them.
