About Gretchen

Hi! My name is Gretchen I'm currently in the University of Toronto pursuing my degree in Music Performance in cello. I have also been teaching music for six years in private lessons, groups lessons, online lessons, parent-child lessons, and schools. I am also a performer, in which I play in weddings, galas, and concerts in a regular basis. I love music and I would love to share that joy with you!

Being a young but experienced music teacher, my philosophy is that having creative strategies and enthusiasm in teaching music really boasts the interest of students, which let them experience music in a fun and not intimidating way. My first job as a music teacher is to inspire my students to have a passion for music. Though technicality and musicality are also important in music, they will undoubtedly progress as one's love for their instrument grows.

In a typical 1hr music we would first begin with a warm up (scales, arpeggios),then I would listen to the homework/practice that I've assigned last week and give any constructive feedbacks and effective exercises that would be beneficial to particular passages that they might be struggling with. And if they're beginning a new song that week, I would play them the song or at least a snippet of it so they understand the full picture before diving into the fine details. For the last 15-20 mins of the class I would usually ask the student to let me know if there's any short songs or pop songs that they'd like to learn how to play. And because those are shorter songs, I would usually turn them into little ear training exercise where the student would try to figure out the notes of the song after I play them. The more they train their ears the easier it is for them to play songs that they like on their spare time and it is a good skill to have especially if they want to pursue further into music.

I am a type of music teacher that's big on collaboration. Whenever there are accompaniment parts available on the student's piano book, I would definitely play them with my student. A lot of my student say they look forward to the duets the most when they're practicing, so they know they're practicing for something way more exciting.

I am mainly a cello teacher in which I can teach all levels from beginner to ARCT. However I've taught six plus years in piano and vocals in which I can teach up to grade 8, and 2 years experience of teaching guitar and ukulele for beginners.
