About John

Hello, I'm John Sawaya Tracy. Having completed two degrees in music (Voice Opera, and Jazz Performance) from both Paris (France) and Montreal (Canada), I have been teaching/coaching singers and musicians for over 20 years. Music genres range from Pop, to Jazz, Musicals, Blues and even classical music!

A singer, a true singer, should be able to sing almost everything by finding the vocal freedom everyone is talking about. My students come from different backgrounds, from 6 to 75 years old. Singing involves not only the instrument and the body, but also the mind.

Anyone who has a strong ambition and a will for personal improvement is greeted with open arms. Remember that 90% of the challenge is up to you (student) to work on. I am your coach, your tutor, and it is my duty to guide you through and to lead you to your destination, which is finding the best in you and improving it. Lessons can be given in: English French Italian Arabic

  • When and why did you develop an interest in your chosen field?

It’s a good question, because I truly believe that it’s the field that chose me. I’ve been singing since I was a baby, literally. So, it was just a matter of time before I started performing on stage. The first time was at 6 as a pianist, and then eventually I started performing as a singer. I picked the field of music and particularly singing because there was nothing else, I didn’t have any other option. Teaching however came in my early twenties, first out of necessity, and then quickly I noticed the impact I had on other musicians. This is where teaching became a purpose.
  • What makes you passionate about your subject?

Singing is not just a subject, it’s a vocation. I consider the art of singing just like Martial Arts, where a Master teaches his initiates and guides them through the bigger picture of things. In the case of voice coaching, I enjoy studying the voices that I hear and find ways to build those voices with the students. And above all, the difference you make in students’ lives is gratifying both for the students and for myself.

  • What do you like about tutoring? What makes you a "Superprof"?

Tutoring singers is fun, and I get to learn new things about the voice every day. What I also enjoy in coaching voices is that I get to meet many students from various backgrounds, and individuals of all ages. We each have our own path and experiences, and we get to share thoughts and ideas to make music together. What makes me a “Superprof” in my opinion is that I have a lot to share with students, not just technics and voice tips, but also life experiences. They don’t call me “Coach” or “Master” for no reason, I never asked to have a title, they instinctively pick those names because this is how they feel about me after our lessons together. Singing evolves around the body but also a lot on the mindset - and once the mind is healthy, the voice flourishes. Our focus should not just be on the voice but on the person as well.

  • Do you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you? Please explain.

Anyone who’s had it tough and had to work hard for success is my idol. I consider myself lucky to have reached my objectives in life, and I’m still looking forward to new experiences and new dreams I have set for myself. I couldn’t have achieved it without hard work, questioning, trial and error, perseverance and by looking up at some around me who had to work hard to achieve their dreams. I will not name anyone in particular because they are many, but I always encourage my students to be their own idols, to look up to themselves and to be an example for others of what the human body and mind can achieve.

  • What are your keys to success?

It's easy to say, “Hard work”, but I prefer “Smart work”. You need to work smart, to question yourself, to engage with others, to take risks, to learn everyday something new, to make mistakes, to ask questions – the right questions, to strive for achievement and success, and above all, to be yourself! Don’t imitate other singers, learn from them and study their voices to then develop your own persona when it comes to the voice. Practicing and daily development through baby steps are the basics of success for anyone looking to achieve big things in life. Singing is not just something “fun” that you do once a week, you should be obsessed with the idea of sharing your voice with others.
