My teaching method is as follows:
(1) If I have a student with very limited vocabulary, then I start of by asking my student "simple questions" then providing my student "simple answers,"
in English. I use a lot of "sign language" & I give what I am teaching "some context," which helps the student to start "being immersed" in the English language."
(2) Later on or with an intermediate student, I read "a story with illustrations" to my student & I have them also read, the same story. Then, I ask them simple questions which are aimed to stretch their ability to remember vocabulary & to also enable them to start "speaking English:" Simple words, then phrases, then whole sentences.
(3) Further down the road in this learning process, I teach my student about tenses, idiomatic expresses more vocabulary, I teach them how to construct sentences and so on.
