A very relaxed tutor with 20 years experience of sewing. Background in the theatre and now specialising in bridal alterations.

Methodology

I am a methodical and meticulous tutor. My lessons cater for the clients' needs- from the very basic and starting out to the nitty gritty and more advanced detail and skill of sewing. For each lesson a tailored list will be sent in advance for what will be needed to get started. A course can then be decided on focusing on what the client would like to learn- how to work their sewing machine, making cushions/ curtains/ bunting/ clothes or how to alter something. The options of what to learn are endless!

Background

I am a freelance Seamstress and have been for the last 6 years. I now specialise in Bridal Alterations but have recently branched out into tutoring too which I really enjoy and makes a refreshing change from the bridal world! I worked for 13 years at Chichester Festival Theatre, Glyndebourne Opera House and English National Ballet which included touring nationally and internationally. I am a great believer in the preparation for sewing being meticulous, it saves tears further down the line!

Transferable Skills
Through working as a freelance seamstress for the last five years I have learnt some hard lessons in motivation. I have worked with a huge variety of people from all different backgrounds and by working with different shop owners I have learnt the valuable skill of diplomacy, making your voice heard, standing up for yourself, confidence, self-belief and being consistently organized to be able to meet constant deadlines. I do all my own administration and accounts so have good computer skills. I have a full driving licence, very organized and competent.

Current Employment

Dates of Employment,
2016- Present
Full-time Self-employed Seamstress
(Facebook page: Lucylu Sews)

I work for three bridal shops and have my own freelance work. I offer any alterations- from simple hemming to more complex alterations like making sleeves and taking the train off the a dress. I have also made household craft items and blinds and curtains. I do the fittings at the shops, in my house or travel to the bride’s house. During the fittings I often have a whole entourage watching me which can be very challenging. The bride’s voice and wishes can quickly get lost if there are strong characters present so it’s my part of my job to speak up for the bride as my client to help ensure she has the dress that she wants. I have to think on my feet as I never know what is needed before each fitting, and have to remain calm and unflappable during fittings and communication afterwards. It can be a highly stressful job with no let up in meeting constant deadlines. Clients tend to be highly stressed and emotional and a big part of my job is to make the whole process enjoyable for them as much as I can. For my freelance clients I also talk them through “wedding etiquette” – how to move and walk in their dress, how to sit etc. During the busy times I work very long hours and can have 30 dresses at once that are being worked on. I also prepare the dresses for my freelance clients- steaming etc, and can also go to the venue to get them ready on the actual day. I often have to restore wedding veils that have been in the family for generations which is a job that I find real satisfaction in.

Career History

2010-2013
Secretary for Feel Inspired
I worked part-time for a small family business (based at home) doing all the administration and helping with accounts. I would organize the clients’ holidays from accommodation, ski equipment hire, lift passes and skiing lessons. I would also help with the ski shows by being on the stand and sorting out the admin side of it such as risk assessments. The company offers holidays in Baqueira Beret in the Spanish Pyrenees, having its own chalet and apartments as well as offering accommodation in other hotels. I also helped organize students who were training with BBSkiSchool for their BASI.

2011-2013
Henfield Museum
I worked as a volunteer for 2 years for the museum. I started to sort out and catalogue their surprisingly large clothes and accessories collection. I would bring the boxes home to photograph, date and do a small amount of restoration if it was within my capabilities. The earliest item I found was from 1840. I also put together a small exhibition of some of their Victorian collection, writing out information about the garments and carefully prepping them in a way that they could safely be displayed. The last time the collection had been changed had been at least 20 years prior to that.

2007-2009:
Touring Wardrobe Assistant for English National Ballet
My main responisibilties when on tour included setting out the shows, quick-changes, supervising dressers, alterations and laundry. We toured in the UK going to places like: Liverpool, Oxford, Plymouth, Woking, Southampton, Cardiff, Bristol, Manchester, Sadlers Wells, and would do the Christmas season at the London Coliseum each year. We also toured abroad to Barcelona, Parma, Modena and Hong Kong. I worked on the following productions: Manon, Swan Lake, Nutcracker, Giselle, Coppelia, Alice in Wonderland, The Sleeping Beauty, Rites of Spring, Ballet Russes, La Sylphide, Song of the Earth and La Corsaire. During my time with ENB I worked as a Dresser, covered as Shoe Mistress for the Spring Tour and was Wardrobe Assistant for 2 years. When we were not on tour, we would be back at base in Kent where we would sort out all the costumes and accessories from tour to put back into storage and prep for the next tour. We would also sort out shows that were going out on hire.

2000- 2007
Dresser; Laundry Assistant; Junior Wardrobe Assistant; Wardrobe Assistant for Glyndebourne Opera House
I started working at Glyndebourne as my summer job when I was at university as a Dresser. I slowly moved up to be Junior Wardrobe Assistant by 2004. My main duties were alterations, sourcing rehearsal costumes, setting out shows, laundry, quick-changes, supervising dressers, working in Production Wardrobe, and overseeing the male chorus. I was also allocated 3 shows per season which I was responsible for organizing and also got involved with filming for one of the shows. I did the BBC Proms for 3 years, a performance at Hampton Court Palace and also went on their national tours in the autumns for 2 years. We toured to places like Milton Keynes, Woking, Southampton, Plymouth, Norwich, and Sadlers Wells. I worked on the following shows: St Matthew Passion, Fidelio, Carmen, Albert Herring, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Peter Grimes, Turn of the Screw, L’elisir d’amore, Flight, Iphigenie en Aulide, Rodelinda, Giulio Cesare, Hansel und Gretel, The Makropulos Case, Le Nozze di Figaro, L’incoronazione di Poppea, Cosi Fan Tutte, Die Zauberflote, Giovanni, Idomeneo, Betrothal in a Monastery, La Boheme, The Miserly Knight, La Cenerentola, The Bartered Bride, Die Fledermaus, The Rake’s Progress, Eugene Onegin, Macbeth, La Traviata, Otello, Euryanthe, Tangier Tattoo, and The Magic Flute. I also helped sort out shows to go out on hire as well as organizing the current shows.

2005
Dresser for Holiday on Ice in Brighton
Responsible for assisting the artistes in quick changes, setting out the quick changes and setting out the show.

2003
Teaching Assistant for Clapham and Patching Primary School
I worked for 5 months as a Teaching Assistant with a view to starting to train as a teacher. I worked in classes from Reception to Year 3 and would assist them on outings and also did two seminars for the whole school.

2002
Secretary for the Rehabilitation and Outreach Mental Health Team
I organised the diaries, wrote letters, answered the telephone and passed on messages.

2000
Assistant Stage Manager and Deputy Wardrobe Manager for Opera Brava
We did a show called “The Promise” for the year 2000. It had a strong Christina message and involved 200 children from different schools. We would go to the various schools for rehearsals before the performance at the Horsham Arts Centre. I helped make the props, and would give the artistes their cues to go on stage as well as setting out the show. I also helped make the costumes and would set the costumes out.

1999
Wardrobe Manager for the Connaught Theatre
I was responsible for buying all the footwear as well as making Cinderella’s glass slipper. I had a deputy and a dresser to supervise, doing the alterations, making costumes if needed, quick-changes, setting out the shows, laundry and the maintenance of the wigs and accessories.

1998
Work Experience at Chichester Festival Theatre
I worked for 6 weeks in the wardrobe department doing mainly leather work and working on the shows. I worked on the shows Chimes at Midnight and Songs of Singapore.

Interests and Hobbies

My family is incredibly important to me and I have a wonderful 3 year old son. I care a great deal for my family and we spend as much time together as we can. I love sewing, art, reading, writing poetry, painting, walking, and skiing. I am an active Christian and very passionate about people knowing God’s love in a positive way. I have always been involved in Church life from running crèche, to helping in the youth club and helping in prayer ministry. When I was at university I got very involved with women’s ministry and helped run the student church.
