About Matthias
Orchestra and chamber music are my main passions. I have been a member of the BBC Symphony Orchestra since 2012. Whenever time allows I‘m playing chamber music in all sorts of different formations.
I started studying the violin in Germany (Frankfurt and Dusseldorf) before falling in love with the viola whilst at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London (BMus and MMus).

The Viola is the butt of so many jokes among musicians, yet it is the instrument that more closely than any other stringed instrument resembles the human voice. It drives the harmonic and rhythmic progression in a Beethoven symphony, colours Debussy's tone poems with its rich velvety timbre, adds wit to the texture of a Haydn string quartet. Is it too presumptious to say that by bridging the gap between the cello and the violin, the viola sits at the centre of the musical universe?
The Viola is all about sound - and this will be the main focus of our lessons as it informs every aspect of our playing technique and our approach to the instrument and the music in front of us.
