About Carolyn
Struggling with intonation often stems from improper physical tension rather than a lack of musicality. Tension is actually the primary enemy of beautiful tone. I hold a BMus from the UBC School of Music and apply that formal training to every session. Intermediate learners and performance students benefit from my focus on precision and structural understanding.
I provide custom scale and etude sheets for each student to support their specific progress. We address sight reading and exam preparation for ABRSM or Trinity requirements during our time together. Playing within the National Arts Centre Orchestra remains the centerpiece of my musical life. You deserve a mentor who understands the nuance of professional performance while remaining grounded in 13 years of teaching experience.
My studio in Vancouver serves as a space for students from RCM Grade 1 through Grade 10 to refine their craft. I guide pupils through complex bowing techniques like spiccato and staccato while ensuring left hand agility becomes second nature. Posture and hold are the foundations I emphasize to prevent injury and promote effortless movement. Vibrato and tone production are refined through careful study of repertoire and orchestral standards.
Shifting positions and scales become manageable tasks under my methodical guidance. I enjoy the process of watching a student grow into a confident musician.
