About Isla

With a Bachelor of Arts in Violin Performance and over seven years of teaching experience, I have dedicated my career to nurturing a love for music in my students. My journey began at a young age, captivated by the violin's expressive power and versatility. Through rigorous training and performance opportunities, I developed a deep understanding of both classical and modern music. This diverse background informs my teaching, allowing me to offer a rich and varied learning experience to my students.

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that music education should be both comprehensive and enjoyable. I strive to create a positive and motivating environment where students feel encouraged to explore their musical potential. By tailoring lessons to each student's interests and goals, I ensure that learning remains engaging and relevant. Whether preparing for conservatory exams or exploring new musical genres, my students receive personalized instruction that meets their individual needs and aspirations.

In addition to technical proficiency, I emphasize the importance of musical expression and interpretation. I guide my students in understanding the emotional and narrative aspects of music, helping them to convey these elements in their playing. This holistic approach not only enhances their technical skills but also fosters a deeper connection to the music. Through discussions about the historical and cultural contexts of pieces, listening assignments, and performance practice, I aim to cultivate well-rounded musicians who appreciate the breadth and depth of their art.

Continual growth and development are central to my approach as an educator. I stay informed about the latest teaching methods and musical trends through workshops, masterclasses, and professional collaborations. This commitment to ongoing learning ensures that my students benefit from current, effective teaching strategies. My goal is to inspire a lifelong passion for music in each of my students, equipping them with the skills, confidence, and enthusiasm to pursue their musical dreams, whether on the concert stage or as a cherished personal pursuit.

In my violin and viola lessons, I aim to create an engaging and encouraging atmosphere where students can thrive. Each lesson begins with a warm-up session that includes scales, arpeggios, and technical exercises tailored to the student's skill level. This not only prepares the student physically but also sets the tone for focused and productive practice. We then review previous material to reinforce learning and ensure a solid foundation before introducing new concepts and pieces.

I believe in a student-centered approach, tailoring each lesson to the individual’s goals, interests, and learning pace. For those preparing for conservatory exams, I provide a rigorous and structured curriculum that covers all necessary repertoire, technical skills, and music theory. For students interested in modern music or playing for personal enjoyment, I incorporate a variety of genres and styles, ensuring that lessons remain exciting and relevant. This customization helps maintain motivation and fosters a deep connection to the instrument.

Musical expression and interpretation are key components of my teaching philosophy. I encourage students to explore the emotional and storytelling aspects of music, guiding them in phrasing, dynamics, and articulation to bring pieces to life. We often discuss the historical and cultural context of the music, which enriches the learning experience and enhances the student’s appreciation and understanding. Listening assignments and performance practice are also integral parts of the lessons, helping students develop a well-rounded musicality.

Flexibility and fun are at the heart of my methodology. I adapt my teaching style to meet the unique needs of each student, whether they require more visual aids, hands-on activities, or additional time on certain concepts. By incorporating games, improvisation exercises, and duet playing, I make the learning process enjoyable and engaging. My ultimate goal is to instill a lifelong love for music in my students, equipping them with the skills and confidence to pursue their musical aspirations, whether professionally or as a cherished hobby.
