My teaching methods have been developed through years of experience of teaching a wide range of students. They are student centred and allow you to learn at your own pace, incorporating listening skills, note reading skills and theory skills into your playing. I can adapt my approach to children and adults, and have taught in groups too. I build long lasting relationships with students, always listening and adapting to your needs. The lessons always involve a review of the previous one, a discussion about the week's home practise, any problems encountered, or comments about the week. A warm up is done, and then focussed work on the current piece, observing and evaluating techniques and musicianship. Targets are regularly set, and feedback given on a frequent basis. Goals are discussed and reviewed periodically, whether it's a particular song that is being learnt for a performance, or a graded exam that is being taken.
I am a Self employed violin teacher, with Grade 8 violin qualification and an Adult Teaching Certificate. I have taught in schools, community settings and privately, to individuals and groups. I am a passionate musician, playing in orchestras, local bands and folk sessions. I have also organised and led choirs and music ensembles, and have managed a range of music projects. I prepare students for grade exams, or teach for fun. I also teach folk techniques. I make my lessons fun and always offer a varied repertoire and techniques, to suit the student.
I am a creative and passionate Community Musician, with a large portfolio of expertise, specialising in violin teaching, but am also an experienced performer, and recording artist, and a frequent collaborator with other musicians. I am an orchestra member, and play in a modern country band, as well as in traditional folk sessions, and am part of a singer/ songwriter duo. My work has included projects with children, and with adults with learning disabilities. I also have a long track record of development projects that widen access to the arts. With excellent communication and teamworking skills, and a natural ability to build good relationships with students, parents and communities, I can make an outstanding contribution to any organisation.
Soar Valley Music Centre: (SVMC) Violin Tutor and Music Tutor - from Sept. 2012
I am employed on a freelance basis by this organisation that provides a range of musical experiences for children and young people. As a violin tutor, I teach in primary schools across Leicester and the county. I teach from beginner level up to Grade 8, and often prepare students for graded exams for ABRSM and Trinity Exam Boards. Additionally, I teach violin at the SVMC. I have taught on Initial Access Projects, where large groups of Year 3 pupils were given the opportunity to learn the violin. I am involved in the organization of ensemble projects at SVMC (eg. String Concerts), and prepare students for orchestral and other workshop/ensemble activities.
As a Music Tutor, I go into primary schools and teach whole class music to years 1 – 6. This involves creating and leading a wide range of music activities for large groups, on a weekly basis, including singing, rhythm games, listening games, and making music.
Woodgate Resources Centre, P/T Violin Tutor and Development Worker from Jan 2010
This community centre is located in a multicultural area of the inner city, comprised mainly of low income households. I joined as a P/T violin tutor for this exciting music project, delivering subsidised instrumental lessons to children and young people, most of whom would not be able to access traditional provision due to cost and/or cultural barriers. Our approach creates an informal learning environment, and opportunities for lots of enrichment projects on top. Some years ago, I took on some development work, including fundraising, creating and running projects, and collaborating with other arts organisations.
Self Employed P/T Violin Tutor from 1995
I also teach violin privately, and for a voluntary organisation. I have been doing this work for over 25 years, and enjoy the creativity and challenge of the role, and find the development of relationships with learners very rewarding. I guide some students through the ABRSM and Trinity College Practical Exams. I also encourage ensemble playing, performances, and other styles of playing.
Qualifications: I have a BA honours in Psychology and English; A Postgraduate Diploma in Community Education; An Adult Teaching Certificate (PETALS); Grade 8 violin ABRSM
