About Martina
Having started teaching and performing professionally in 1991, I am a member of the Windsor Symphony and have served as a leader of multiple orchestral sections, including the Vancouver Opera- Film- and Olympic Orchestras, the BC & National Ballet Touring Orchestras, the Vancouver Island and Okanagan Symphonies, and the Alberta Symphony Orchestra. I have also performed extensively with the Vancouver Symphony and the Edmonton Symphony Orchestras as well as the CBC and NBO Chamber Orchestras, the Strauss Orchestra of Canada, Lions Gate Sinfonia and played with the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet on their tour. I won a position with the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in 2024 and as a chamber musician, have played with Juno and other award winners after winning solo and chamber music competitions nationally. I toured and performed across N. America, Europe and Asia, recorded for radio, TV, movies and CDs and have performed as a concerto soloist with orchestras across Canada. As a teacher, I was presented the Teaching Excellence Award by the Alberta String Association. I was short-listed as a National Finalist for RCM's 125 Year Anniversary Teacher Award and have been invited to judge and adjudicate competitions and festivals across Canada, incl. Kiwanis, the CMC, and many others. Having served as Sessional Instructor at UBC, Director of UBC's Summer Strings Institute and teacher of the University of Alberta's viola students, for many years, I now maintain a private studio of students, in Sarnia, Ontario, in person and teach online internationally. I give workshops, masterclasses and coaching sessions, and have conducted many youth string orchestras. I served as the strings coordinator for the EPSB Music Enrichment Program, and in my own teaching studio, for the last 25 years, have offered string orchestra, chamber music and a variety of group classes. Member of CFMTA, CVS, AVS, and an RCMT, I prepare students for exams and festivals, if they would like to do them. My students have won RCM Gold Medals and Gold and Platinum awards in regional, provincial, national, and international competitions and festivals.

I teach the European method of playing as I find it to be the most ergonomic way of playing the instruments and the way that the most fluid and ringing tone can be brought out of them, in the most comfortable manner. I use a variety of material, incl. European, Suzuki and RCM (I am becoming an RCM Examiner), along with other sources. I teach ages 4 and up and all levels. Some of my students choose to go into violin/viola performance/teaching as a career and I have prepared them to win major competitions, scholarships and awards (incl. international ones), and full stipends to major post-secondary schools of music at universities globally, being loaned top-notch instruments as awards by the schools and benefactors, which they would otherwise not be able to afford. My students who choose other careers or are still younger, or adult students, enjoy making beautiful music and having fun with a variety of genres, incl. classical, fiddle, pop, Disney, movie music, jazz etc. I adapt my selections of music for each student but always make sure they learn proper posture and all necessary technique, allowing them to play effortlessly and enjoy their sound.

I am truly fortunate to have had the privilege of studying under Martina Smazal. From the moment I started lessons, it was immediately clear that I was in the hands of someone not only deeply skilled but also genuinely passionate about teaching. Thanks to her guidance, I have built a stronger technical foundation, gained a deeper sense of confidence in my playing, and developed a true appreciation for the art of music. It is because of Martina's mentorship that I have been able to pursue a career that continues to center around music.

Martina was my first violin teacher in Ottawa, over 20 years ago. She was kind, patient and incredibly skillful at teaching and imparting enthusiasm and knowledge. A recent reconnection with Martina confirms she is as enthusiastic and immersed in music than ever! I am a trained luthier now and am exceedingly grateful to have the skill to play and assess my own instruments - thank you, Martina!
Martina truly cares about each individual student under her wing of musical care. Her enduring patience with my son and other students is only one of her many deeming qualities as a teacher. She is also dedicated, encouraging and enthusiastic about a students' every stage of development and this shows through in her detailed teaching. We have been with Martina for 3 -4 years and are very happy with her as my son's violin teacher.

Martina is a very attentive teacher and patient with her students. My son has been with her for a few years now and I am confident in saying that Martina has played a large role in his growth in playing.
I have been studying with Ms. Smazal for the past two years and I wholeheartedly recommend her for students of all ages and levels. Besides being a splendid musician and pedagogue, she is very devoted to her students. Ms. Smazal is very knowledgeable and excellent at teaching repertoire and building violin/viola technique, no matter what your starting point is. Beyond this, Ms. Smazal has been exceedingly helpful in teaching ear training. Her instruction has been invaluable!
Martina is an incredible teacher, very knowledgeable and understanding. If a student has trouble, she finds different approaches and guides them until they improve their playing. Would definitely recommend!
My daughter has been a student of Martina’s for 6 years now and we couldn’t ask for a more dedicated and honest teacher. She is passionate about her craft and truly cares about the progress of her students. Over the years we have seen many of her students being recognized for their skill and talent. Although her students are truly talented, her support and hard work is what always gives them that extra competitive edge when they participate in various festivals and musical events. I have recommended her many times over the years to friends and family.
