Putting the student at the centre.
When it comes to teaching no one size fits all. Rather, it is the duty of the teacher to understand the student, and tailor his methods accordingly. Even more so with private lessons, where the needs and requirements of the learner vary, one must take that extra step, and listen to his tutee in order to provide the knowledge in a way that is easily digestible. I generally like to do so by integrating the required learning with ludic activities and the personal interests of the student.
All that said, I am a bit fussy and very very precise. :)
