About Cynthia

Cynthia Mathiesen is a graduate of Ithaca College School of Music. She earned a Bachelor of Music in violin, studying music performance and music education in December of 2016. She performed with the Ithaca College Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Meyer at Lincoln Center in New York City in 2013. She also performed with the Ithaca College Chamber Orchestra where she had the opportunity to perform under the baton of famed American conductor Carl St. Clair. Cynthia began her studies in historical performance in the spring of 2013 at Cornell University under the guidance of musicologists Dr. Neal Zaslaw and Carlos Ramírez. She went on to study with members of the esteemed Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra in Toronto at the Tafelmusik Summer Institute in 2015. In 2016, she attended the International Education of Students Abroad Institute in Vienna to study German and music history focusing on the life and works of Haydn and Mozart. While in Vienna, she studied with the Polish-born violin virtuoso Barbara Gorzynska. Upon her return to the states, she participated in Ithaca College School of Music’s Beethoven Project, where she performed Beethoven’s sonata for Piano and Violin No. 6 with pianist Maria Rabbia. Last spring, Cynthia participated with Cornell University’s Bach Project. The Bach Project presented some of Bach’s cantatas and motets with lectures by musicologist David Yearsly examining the social, cultural, and historical aspects of Bach’s works and how they relate to and shape our modern society. In December of 2017, she performed Corelli’s Christmas Concerto Grosso as a soloist with the Cornell Baroque Orchestra. Cynthia has participated in master classes with Christopher Hogwood (founder of the Ancient Academy of Music), Jory Vinikour (American virtuoso harpsichordist), and Jeanne Lamon (former director of Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra). Her teachers have included Calvin Wiersma, Nicholas DiEugenio, Peter Rovit, Julia Wedman, Cristina Zacharias, and Paul Miller.

My teaching approach combines both traditional methods and the renowned Suzuki method to foster a well-rounded musical education. I offer 30-minute ($30), 45-minute ($45), and 60-minute ($60) lessons. Each lesson is tailored to suit the individual needs of the student, typically following this structure: Technique Building: This includes bow exercises, 1-3 octave scales and arpeggios, notation comprehension, and left-hand building exercises. Etudes: Designed to target specific skills such as rhythm, bowing technique, shifting positions, and notation comprehension. Repertoire Development: Focused on solo or orchestral pieces, this aspect of the lesson helps build a student's overall musicianship and prepares them for performance. What sets me apart is my expertise in classical music, cultivated through years of study and performance in orchestras across North America and Europe. With over 15 years of experience teaching both private and group lessons, I have taught in diverse settings including private lessons, public schools, and private schools. I have also held leadership roles as a lead teacher and assistant conductor with the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra’s Young People's String Orchestra and the Petit Ensemble.
