For Classical guitar I structure my teaching around the Grades as appropriate s. As well as emphasising technique I feel it also really important to develop musicianship. This includes understanding harmony. For beginners I would focus on duets with the tutor.
For Jazz I would ensure the student understands the fundamentals of Classical harmony before proceeding to Jazz Harmony (which must include the Blues). It is fundamental that the Jazz guitarist is comfortable with reading a leadsheet. Finally the student must understand how to approach improvisation.
For most of my working life I have been a Geophysicist. During that time I acquired a Grade 8 (Distinction) in Classical guitar and have recently taught several students (beginners) the Classical guitar. I was taught by Gibert Biberion whilst at college). I have also played in several guitar orchestras .
For Jazz I was taught by Winston Morson. I have played in many different ensembles and had, for a while, my own trio.
I currently play in a Cuban Band (Orquester Estellar) and, last year, completed a course on Cuban music in Havana. I have also played and sung with a Brazilian 'Cantar' group and am therefore familiar with many of the styles of Latin America,
I obtained my Bsc. in Geology/Physics in 1974. I worked in the Oil industry for over 30 years during which time a taught various aspects of Geophysics to undergraduates in various locations throughout the world.
Whilst working I acquired my Grade 8 in Classical guitar.
After leaving the industry I acquired a TEFL certificate and have now some ESL experience.
