About Christopher

I’m Christopher Cortez, a Mexican-American cellist based in New York City. As an active performer, I’ve appeared in major concert halls such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Chicago’s Symphony Center, performing as an orchestral cellist, chamber musician, and soloist. My career has taken me across the U.S. and abroad, working under renowned conductors and alongside leading ensembles.

I am a graduate of the Chicago College of Performing Arts where I studied under John Sharp and Karen Basrak of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. My musical education includes masterclasses with Daniel Müller-Schott, Alban Gerhardt, the American String Quartet, Borromeo String Quartet, and the Ying String Quartet. My mentors also include Jurgen de Lemos and additional coachings with Alban Gerhardt.

As an orchestral musician, I have performed with the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, New Jersey Festival Orchestra, New England Symphonic Ensemble, Chicago Composers Orchestra, Ensemble 212, and others throughout the Denver, Chicago, and NYC metropolitan areas. Additionally, I am a frequent guest performer at the Mannes School of Music. Recently, I was a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall’s Stern Auditorium performing Eric Whitacre’s The Sacred Veil. As a chamber musician, I have been featured on Chicago’s WFMT radio.

In addition to performing, I’m passionate about teaching and sharing my love for the cello. My approach blends traditional conservatory training with modern pedagogy, drawing from Suzuki, Feuillard, Ševčík, Popper, and other foundational methods and scale systems. I adapt lessons to each student’s goals, whether building fundamentals as a beginner, preparing auditions, or refining artistry at an advanced level. Music theory and ear training are incorporated when useful, ensuring a complete and well-rounded education. I believe in fostering not only technical skill but also creativity, confidence, and a genuine connection to music. Each lesson is designed to inspire growth while meeting the student where they are in their journey. Whether you’re exploring the cello for the first time or aiming for professional development, I aim to provide a supportive, structured, and motivating environment. Teaching allows me to pass on the knowledge I’ve gained from years of performing and studying with world-class musicians, and it’s my goal to help every student discover their own voice on the cello.

My teaching draws on a blend of methods, including Suzuki, Feuillard, Ševčík, Popper, Dotzauer, to create a well-rounded and personalized learning experience. I adapt these approaches to meet each student’s individual needs, ensuring a solid technical foundation while nurturing musical expression. For beginners, I emphasize clear, step-by-step progression and the joy of discovering the instrument. For intermediate and advanced players, I focus on refining technique, expanding repertoire, and developing artistry. When appropriate, I incorporate essential music theory to strengthen understanding and support well-rounded musicianship. My goal is to guide each student toward confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of the cello.
