About Michael
I'm a 28-year-old based in North Nottinghamshire who loves music. I graduated from University with an English degree - I don't have formal musical qualifications, and only started making music when I was 17, but I quickly improved and performed as a stand-in vocalist with a jazz band in Nottingham within a few years. At around age 22, I decided to take learning the piano much more seriously in order to self-accompany my singing. I self-taught to a level where I feel confident in public performance and improvisation without singing, having recently performed on the keyboard at a Christmas fair in my local church, as well as several public pianos to warm reception.
In over a decade of passionate musical learning, I have learned much about music theory which allows me to understand and play my favourite music at the piano in a way which I believe can be taught quite naturally. I hope to pass this on and allow others to benefit from the approach I have taken. It is my lack of formal musical training at the piano which I believe will help me teach beginners in an accessible and logical way.
I also enjoy teaching; I have given informal music lessons before and I'm currently teaching English as a foreign language. I also briefly taught table tennis to children at my former secondary school, for which I was DBS checked.

I'm looking to pass on my love of music and help people start to play their favourite music, and to express themselves at the keyboard/piano in a natural way. I would be most effective at teaching beginner students of the keyboard/piano, or those who are more experienced, but who are dependent on sheet music and who wish to be able to understand how to improvise or create music more freely.
I am mostly self-taught, and highly music theory orientated (mostly playing by looking at the keyboard). Although I understand and can introduce you to sheet music reading, I would naturally be better at teaching you my approach to music theory, in order to allow you to play your favourite music and understand how it is made, as well as improvise and create music yourself in order to enjoy playing the instrument straight away.
Amongst other things, I can teach you how chords work, how chord progressions work, how the 12 major scales work, about transposition, swung and classical rhythm, how key signatures and common time signatures work in relation to sheet music, using a metronome to practise, healthy technique and warm-up exercises, ways to practise, the role of the circle of fifths, types of intervals, different chord notation, and introduce you to the natural, harmonic, and melodic minor scales, as well as modal harmony. I can introduce you to stride, swing, the blues, boogie-woogie, pop and classical styles at the piano.
Most importantly, I believe I will be able to teach this information in a way that makes sense and is not complicated. To prove it, even if you have no musical experience whatsoever, you will be able to improvise at the keyboard/piano in a simple way, by yourself, after our first free consultation.
I am also a beginner at the guitar, and I can introduce you to this instrument too. Again, I would be most suitable as a teacher for beginners. I can teach you how to play beginner chords, barre chords, healthy technique, as well as beginner rhythms and strumming patterns. The music theory approach I can teach you at the piano will prove adaptable and useful for any instrument which plays a note.
I can provide a free initial consultation where you can decide if my lessons would be right for you. It may be that you naturally prefer another approach or style of learning, and although I can do my best to cater to this, it is fine if you decide my lessons aren't for you!
