About Kieran
My name is Kieran and I am a second year medical student at the University of Sheffield. I have a real passion for biological, chemical and psychological processes, this is why I chose to study medicine. However, teaching these subjects and fundamentals is something I adore. Not only do I get to discuss the topics that fascinate me, I can help others learn it and enjoy these amazing subjects.
Biology and Chemistry are hard subjects at KS3, GCSE and A-level. I know this from recent experience I struggled with understanding the key ideas and how to apply my knowledge to exams, however I managed to improve my grades to achieve 9/8 in GCSEs and A-stars in Biology/Chemistry and Psychology at A-level.
My aim is to help you understand what is going on and remember the details around it. I use a variety of techniques including question walkthroughs, active verbal blurting (see below for more), diagram annotations, flashcard quizzes and more. Exam technique and past papers are tools I use more towards mocks and real exams, but can always be requested by a student as well.

In our 1 hour sessions, I hope to allow students to work at the pace that suits them, whether you prefer covering lots of content quickly or to deepen and strengthen your understanding. However, all sessions will involve a quick welcome and starter task to set a peaceful and productive vibe to our session. I also like to end our session with some exam style questions. The main bulk of the lesson will vary on what the request of the student is whether they want to perfect exam technique or to get their head around a hard concept. Homework will be given after each lesson, it is optional but highly recommended!!
Techniques I use:
Active verbal/written blurting techniques- This is my favourite technique where I will use a series of cues and questions to allow students to recall facts in a specific order. This helps students understand topics in a more holistic way and also remember details better.
Teach-reteach technique- For harder/unfamiliar topics I will explain to the student the core principles and ideas, through diagrams/power points/verbally. Then I will ask students to reteach the topic to me as if I have never learnt it before. I strongly believe being able to teach/explain concepts the best way for students to understand hard areas of the courses.
Exam based teaching- We will go through past paper questions, focusing on key aspects like command words, focusing on the correct idea, timing and mark allocations, and important key terms.
