About Olive
I have dedicated fifteen years to the advanced education of more than 590 chemistry students, many of whom are now research chemists, professors, and industry leaders. My academic credentials include a doctoral degree in organic chemistry and a long career as a university lecturer and research supervisor. I have published extensively in organic synthesis and polymer chemistry and have supervised doctoral students in top research groups. My teaching has taken me to universities and research institutions in multiple countries where I have developed expertise in preparing students for elite scientific careers. I am known for my intellectual rigour, my passion for organic chemistry, and my ability to train students in the precise thinking required for synthetic problem solving. I maintain active research collaborations and bring current developments from the chemical literature directly into my teaching. Outside of tutoring, I review manuscripts for chemistry journals, consult for chemical companies, and enjoy classical music and historical architecture. I believe that organic chemistry is the most creative of the sciences and I am committed to helping every student experience the satisfaction of designing and understanding molecular transformations.

My chemistry teaching reflects fifteen years of experience at the highest levels of organic and polymer chemistry education. I teach advanced organic synthesis through retrosynthetic analysis, teaching students to work backwards from target molecules to available starting materials while considering stereochemistry, regioselectivity, and reaction efficiency. Polymer chemistry is taught through the chemistry of chain growth and step growth polymerisation with connections to materials science, engineering, and industrial applications. I emphasise the three-dimensional thinking required for stereochemistry using molecular models, computer graphics, and spatial reasoning exercises. Reaction mechanisms are taught as electron flow patterns that can be predicted and understood rather than memorised sequences. I teach students to evaluate synthetic routes for efficiency, sustainability, and practicality. For physical organic chemistry, I cover kinetics, thermodynamics, and molecular orbital theory with the mathematical rigour required for research. Examination preparation includes extensive practice with mechanism problems, synthesis design, and spectroscopic structure determination. I also mentor students in research laboratory techniques, scientific writing, and preparation for chemistry olympiads and university interviews. My teaching is demanding and intellectually stimulating.
