Topic -: Area of Rectangle and Square
. What is Area?
Area is the amount of space inside a flat shape. We count how many squares fit inside it.
Unit: We measure area in square units like `cm²`, `m²`, km² `square tiles`.
AREA OF RECTANGLE.
A rectangle has 4 sides. The opposite sides are equal. It has length and width/breadth.
Formula
`Area = Length × Width`
A= L × B
Example:
1.A book cover is 20cm long and 15cm wide. Calculate the area
A = L × B
A=?
L=20cm
B= 15cm
A = 20cm × 15cm= 300 `cm²`
So the tiles is 300 small squares.
2. A rectangle water tank with 12cm long and 6cm wide calculate for the area it will cover in my new compound.
Solution
L=12cm
B= 6cm
A=?
A = L × B
A= 12cm × 6cm
A= 72cm²
The area it will cover will be 72cm²
3. If an area of rectangular shape is calculated to be 45m² calculate its length if the breadth is 5m
Solution
Data
L=?
B=5m
A=45m²
A=L × B
45m² = L × 5m
Divide both sides by 5m
45m²/5m = L ×5m/5m
45m/5
9m = L
9m is the length of the shape
AREA OF A SQUARE
A square is a special shape. All 4 sides are equal.
Formula
`Area = Side × Side` A = L × L
or `Area = Side²`. A = L²
Example:
1.A tile is 10cm on each side what is its area?
A=10cm²
Area = 10cm × 10cm = 100cm²
A=100cm²
That’s why we say “10 squared”.
2. What is the area of a square shape with 4m long?
Solution
A=L²
A = 4m²
= 4m × 4m = 16m²
3. Calculate the length of a square tile with an area of 25cm²
Solution
Data
A= 25cm²
L²=?
A =L²
25cm² = L²
Take the Square root both sides
√25cm² = √L²
5cm×5cm = L
5cm = L
The length is 5cm
Class work
1. Find area of rectangle: Length = 8m, Width = 5m
2. Find area of square: Side = 7cm
3. Find the breadth of a rectangular shape of length 3cm and area 21cm²
4. The area of square kitchen is 81m² what is its length?( A=L × L or A= L²)
