I believe that the value of music study is building connections. Music connects us to ourselves, performers to audience, and musicians to other musicians. The connection between musician to musician is special and it represents the value of studying music.
I approach lessons in an open manner. My personality is adjustable, and I am open to teaching students ranging from toddlers to teens. I am open to learning new methods to improve my teaching and using new resources that will benefit the widest variety of students. My two main teaching methods are direct and discovery. Direct, is where I guide the student through the material. This will involve things that are more fact-based, like flash cards for vocabulary, music theory workbooks, and music history texts and websites. These will be incorporated into lessons in order to help students make connections between the things they are learning and gain a better understanding. The discovery approach is more geared towards technique and trial and error. This includes more demonstrations and the student trying out the skill on their own, along with lots of feedback.
I am skilled at teaching music theory and music history. Ear training such as interval identification, chords, and sight reading are strong suits as well. In general, from my instruction, students will achieve a solid understanding of classical repertoire, theory, and history. Students will always be encouraged to branch off and find what pleases them. On their own, students are encouraged to bring music into their lives outside of piano lessons, such as joining their school band or performing duets or small ensembles in school talent shows or in the community.
Learning is a team effort; the teacher, the student, and the parents. I, the teacher, must contribute passion and professionalism. Parents should be just as engaged in the learning as the student is. Communication is key, and parents should communicate with the teacher as often as possible. They need to make an effort to bring their child to the lessons and demonstrate that they want their child to succeed.
Students are highly encouraged to complete practical and theory examinations. It facilitates goal making, and it encourages improvement and gives concrete milestones for the student to work towards. Festivals, recitals, concerts, and other types of performances are highly encouraged as well. Of course, festivals and performances are not for everybody, and parents and student should discuss what they wish to participate in.
In conclusion, my teaching philosophy is centered around dedication, perseverance, and most importantly, enjoyment. Students must demonstrate that they work hard and are willing to do so. The main is that they learn to play skillfully and learn to enjoy producing music.
