About Alex

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have extensive teaching experience in secondary, higher and further education. I've taught GCSE and A level English in school and college and, on getting my PhD, worked as a university lecturer in philosophy. Now a published author, I combine my writing with private tuition.

I have been running a successful, home-based tuition practice since 2010 and have taught pupils from schools of all kinds, as well as some independent exam candidates and adult learners.

- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?

Yes, I have an enhanced CRB certificate.

- Do you belong to any professional organisations?

I am a member of the Society of Authors and sit on the organisation's management committee.

- Tell me about some of your current students.

My students come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some attend state schools where large class sizes make it difficult to get individual attention; others are at independent schools with a very demanding curriculum.

Some of my GCSE students struggle with writing accurately and producing the analysis needed for both literature and language; others enjoy the subject but lack the confidence that comes from understanding exactly what's expected of them. Many students stay with me several years and only leave once they have done their exams.

My A level students are, for one reason or another, a grade or two behind what they need: past students have reported dramatic improvements which enable them to go to their university of choice.

I have had a number of students who have missed out on their formal education and have taken their GCSE or A level English exams as independent candidates.

I am an experienced, highly qualified tutor and writer with a background in both education and journalism. After five years running a busy home-based tuition practice in south London, I have recently moved to Bradford-on-Avon.

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

I teach English Literature and English Language at GCSE and A level. I also help students to prepare for university entrance and to improve their essay writing and study skills.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

I have a BA in English from Oxford University and an MA and PhD in philosophy from Essex University.

- How much do you charge?

I charge £40 per teaching hour for all levels except GCSE school-based pupils, for which the charge is £35 per session.

- Where do you teach?

I teach from my home in Bradford-on-Avon and, in some cases, online via Skype.

- When are you available?

I teach in the afternoons and evenings during the week. I am generally available through the Easter and Christmas holidays, and much of the summer.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

I teach students at GCSE and A level, so 14-18. Sometimes I prepare older students for re-sits and university entrance. I can also help with essay writing at degree level, and am pleased to see adults who want to improve their writing skills for academic or professional reasons.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

GCSE
A levels
University entrance
Academic writing at undergraduate and postgraduate level

- Do you have a personal message for students?

If you're considering private tuition, don't leave it too late! Learning works best when sufficient time is given to develop understanding and knowledge - the skills in English particularly are cumulative.

An initial meeting is free of charge and involves no commitment. It's helpful if a parent accompanies a school-age student.
