About Umar
I am a self-taught artist and natural historian based in Northern Nigeria. My work spans illustration, design, traditional basketry, botanical cultivation, and arachnology — the study of spiders — which I have researched independently for several years. Alongside my art practice, I run a natural fiber startup, which has deepened my understanding of materials, craft traditions, and process-driven thinking. I am entirely self-directed, which means I know firsthand what it takes to build genuine knowledge outside conventional institutions. I bring that same rigor, curiosity, and patience into every teaching relationship. I take learning seriously — and I take my students seriously.

My lessons are shaped around how each student thinks, not a fixed script. I'm a self-taught artist and natural historian with hands-on experience in illustration, design, and traditional basketry, including Jordanian techniques. I've taught informally across different age groups and bring genuine subject knowledge rather than textbook instruction. Sessions typically run 60 minutes, though I'm flexible based on the student's needs and pace. I welcome students of all ages — from young beginners to adults — and adapt my teaching style accordingly."
