About Samiha
I am a student who has been studying at a grammar school for 7 years. In my free time, I used to mentor several students in either Maths or Chemistry. In year 12, I tutored a student who was struggling in GCSE maths. Often, he would complain with the difficulty of basic arithmetic meaning he found more advanced maths questions more difficult. I was able to identify this weakness in the first week of mentoring him and I was willing to make a drastic change to his technique. At the time I commenced mentoring, he was working at a grade 2/3 however after receiving his results, I was pleased to hear that he achieved a grade 6. He highly appreciated my technique of teaching saying it was snappy but in a way that it stuck in his long term memory for longer. After I realised that teaching was like a hobby to me, I felt inspired to help a range of people with GCSE and Alevel Chemistry. Due to this, I opened an instagram page where I posted a range of my Chemistry notes in a simple format aimed towards students especially struggling at the subject. A few weeks after opening my page, one of my friends found the content really helpful and recommended my page to numerous students.

I finished my Alevels this year and I will start my undergraduate Pharmacy course in September. Depending on the type of student I will tutor, my lesson structure and way of teaching will vary. However, with students I've mentored in the past, I always start off mentioning what the learning objectives of the lesson on. For instance, if I'm teaching a student atoms, elements and compounds, I will initially what's involved in the topic. In this topic, I will mention the definition of an atom, examples of where they are found and the same goes with elements and compounds. My lessons focus on the fundamentals and build up to the more advanced content. If a pupil is struggling with fundamentals, I will spend numerous lessons building this up until it is flawless then jumping a stage higher. I believe worksheets and exam questions are a crucial way to work out what level a student is working at. After I finish a topic, I provide students with a worksheet on questions based on the topic studied. After completion, I give step-by-step reasoning into how an answer is reached before preceding to the next topic.
