If you’ve ever sat down to write a song and felt stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure how to turn an idea into something real, you’re exactly who these lessons are built for.
Songwriting is more than chords and lyrics — it’s storytelling, emotion, and structure working together. In these sessions, you’ll learn how great songs are shaped: the theory behind your favourite genres, the history that informs them, how to experiment effectively, and how vocals and instruments communicate together to create a complete emotional world.
These lessons are designed for everyone — from absolute beginners who have never touched an instrument, to intermediate musicians who want clarity and direction, all the way to advanced players and writers looking to push their skills further. Wherever you’re starting, the lessons meet you there.
Why work with Matt?
Because you’re getting more than a teacher — you’re getting a full-time working musician who lives this craft every day. Matt is a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist who performs, records, and teaches guitar, bass, drums, and singing. He understands every part of the band, giving you a complete perspective on harmony, rhythm, arrangement, and songwriting.
He works comfortably with all ages and skill levels, from complete beginners with zero musical background to experienced players preparing for performances, recordings, or advanced songwriting goals. His background in emotional support ensures lessons are welcoming, judgment-free, and tailored to every student’s learning style.
Matt specializes in breaking creative blocks and teaching the tools musicians wish they learned earlier — genre theory, lyric writing, melody creation, arrangement, ear training, and how to actually finish songs with confidence.
Music isn’t a side hobby for him — it’s his full-time life. With 8+ years of songwriting, coaching, studio work, and performance experience, Matt brings real-world knowledge, clarity, and a supportive structure that helps students grow fast at any level.
If you're ready to unlock your songwriting voice and create music you’re genuinely proud of, this is where you start.

Matthew and I have known each other personally long before he started his lessons. He's played the guitar long prior to when we met, but I only began to show some interest in the instrument myself just a few months ago. I pulled out this old pottery barn kid's electric guitar from my shed and had an extra, so Matthew offered to buy it from me for cheap, and in exchange, he would teach me to play. We both kind of forgot about the guitar, but he's teaching me anyway, and I'm glad to say he's great at what he does! So if you're cool with the epitome of silly/funky and dedicated/passionate for a teacher, then Matther Bury is your man! He integrates a lot of humour into his lessons which keeps me engaged and learning at the same time, the whole time. But of course, this man's comedy skills aren't his only appeal as a teacher. I genuinely think Matthew is the most hardworking and committed man to walk the Earth, and if he wants you to learn to play the guitar, you're learning, whether you want to or not. He will make sure you have mastered every single aspect of the instrument, top to bottom. He'll break complex concepts into simple steps effortlessly and get you grooving in no time. He additionally knows how to play bass and piano, and I plan to learn all three from him! He teaches like he's teaching a trusted friend, and his demeanor never skips a beat. Somehow, Matthew has tapped into some great cosmic energy reserve that allows him to vibrate 24/7 at the frequencies of joy and musical & spiritual enlightenment. So, needless to say at this point in my recommendation, Matthew is an excellent teacher and despite my efforts, I can't advocate for him highly enough!
I met Matthew through a friend and have known him for a while now, he is a lovely guy who is very good at explaining and working with people through different means to account for how they think. He taught me how to play the bass in a single night, and I had fun the whole time while he listened to how I think about music and taught me accordingly. He definitely teaches more casually than someone going through sheet music and doing exercises, at least it was the case for me, and he has a very unique way of getting the lessons across which I found to be incredibly effective. He is a very impressive musician who is always up for a challenge; it feels like you're teaching each other because of how insightful his teaching style is and how it demands and develops an understanding of music that is unique to each student.
Matthew is a fantastic teacher, he is patient and takes time to help you understand things. He is really good at finding different ways to explain and teach things and overall has such a good vibe!!
If you are a beginner or even very experienced he has something to teach everyone :)Matthew has been a very helpful force in my guitar playing journey. He helped teach me the basics and form my own path with the instrument, as well as always helping me improve my improvisation and the way I approach writing. Matthew still consistently shows me new techniques and ideas on the guitar even though we are in totally different musical spheres. I met Matthew at school playing music and in the time I’ve known him he’s consistently always been improving his musical skills. He never stops learning from other and finding new techniques for playing and songwriting, and he knows how to teach tough concepts in a simple way.
