About John
I have been playing the trumpet for about 20 years, and have gone through all the ups and downs of such a fun yet demanding instrument. It has taken me to amazing places to perform and learn, but it has also humbled me countless times.
Wynton Marsalis encouraged me to go through a big embouchure change at the end of college (think of someone learning to walk again after a big injury, changing your embouchure is like learning to play the trumpet all over again). This big change felt like such a setback at my level, but in the end I can play more efficiently now, and it has forced me to learn so many things about the anatomy of trumpet playing that get to share with all of my students.
I also love to sing and play piano, and frequently use these avenues to share musical ideas with my students.
Alongside my love of teaching every week, I perform multiple times a week in different jazz performances. Many of my students have school performances, auditions, and recitals to prepare for, and having a teacher who performs and still works through that performance anxiety every week allows me to lead by example, something that many "teaching only" musicians can't offer.

I teach trumpet players of all levels from the beginner who doesn't know how to hold the horn yet, to the High School Senior who wants to nail their conservatory audition, to the classical professional who wants to learn about jazz, to the hobbyist who wants to get better at the trumpet after work and keep it fun!
Unless the student only wants to focus on one specific thing, most of my lessons encompass trumpet technique/fundamentals, theory/reading, and ear training to allow for a well-rounded player who can feel comfortable in many different settings.
My jazz interest and background is a big influence on my students, as we often will work on improvising, listening to recordings that I can screen-share, and generally learn to use our ears to make musical connections that are prevalent in so many popular genres today.

I've known John for a long time, going on 2 decades. He has been an excellent teacher and greatly improved my music theory knowledge and ability to perform jazz. One moment that stands out to me is when he helped me learn one of Wynton Marsalis' most famous trumpet solos. I can't recommend him enough if you have any interest in jazz or improving your music theory knowledge!
