I believe firmly in getting going as quickly as possible! I have no preference towards style, I just want to give you the tools you need to play the music that you want to play! I believe that playing in time is key to musicality so that's my main focus!
I've recently taught at university level, helping students towards getting very good music degrees! I've also been teaching private instrumental lessons for the last 8 years with great results from all of my students, young, old and all ages in between!
My Teaching philosophy is to get the student playing actual music as quickly as possible in order to keep them engaged. How I do this depends on the student: some need technical help, some need tempo help, some need theoretical help etc. I don’t place an emphasis on teaching any particular style, instead letting the student lead what route they want to go down and giving them the tools to achieve musicality within that idiom - having been trained as a classical musician and a jazz musician I understand that there are multiple ways of explaining the same concept thus allowing me effective and easy communication. I do however try to introduce students to other styles of music they may not have heard before in order to help them understand the whole world of music, from Bach to Bacharach to Mr Bungle. I firmly believe that anyone that can read, write and speak a language can read, write and speak music!
I have recently been awarded at degree in jazz from Middlesex University - achieving a 2:1.
