About Adam
Hello and thanks for checking out my profile!
After first picking up the sticks age 12, I began teaching formally at 16 and haven’t looked back since. 20 years later I've tutored hundreds of students across all ages & abilities with various institutions, drawing on my wealth of performance & recording experience. And as a member of the Independent Society of Musicians, I have been certified with their Registered Private Teacher status, assuring a level of credibility and professionalism.
Since graduating with a music degree from Newcastle Uni (plus a very cold year abroad studying jazz in Montréal, Canada!), I’ve toured extensively across four continents with multiple groups spanning folk to street theatre, neo-soul to noise rock, and laid down drums on numerous recordings.
I have also received music leader training from Gateshead International Centre for Music, delivering workshops for SEND adults and disadvantaged youth.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch with any questions. I look forward to learning what's drawing you to this endlessly inspiring instrument :)

What to expect:
• A safe & inclusive space, welcoming to all backgrounds.
• Two professional drum kits, one for you, one for me.
• PA system for play-alongs.
• Bespoke lesson plans designed for your particular tastes and aims.
• An email after every lesson, documenting our learning and what to practise, plus any materials & links.
Our lessons would be guided by the idea that there is no “one-size-fits-all” approach, with every student having different goals in mind and preferred ways of working. Whether you’ve got your sights set on grade 8 and beyond, or just need a space to let your hair down and play to your favourite tracks, I’ll keep my eye on the bigger picture and tailor our lessons to suit these aims.
From the very first lesson we’ll get playing to real tunes, applying your new grooves & fills in context. But as we dive deeper into the nuts & bolts of what makes a well-rounded drummer, we can explore such topics as:
• Timing & feel.
• Not just what, but HOW to practise.
• Transcribing: working out your favourite parts by ear.
• Reading the dots.
• Improvising: making it up on the spot!
• Stylistic knowledge: from jazz to indie, Afro-Cuban to drum ‘n’ bass – drumming is a great way to discover music you don’t yet know you love.
• Technique: make it easier to play what you want to play.
• Coordination: get those four limbs working in harmony, a bit like driving a car!
• Unlocking creativity to come up with your own ideas.
Of course the list is endless, so no time to lose - come get stuck in!

Adam is a super tutor! Having worked at Side By Side Arts in Gateshead we were so sad to lose him to the big city lights of London!
Adam’s passion for teaching others and creating a culture where his students learn in a fun and engaging way really shine through in every lesson!I kid you not: Adam is probably the best teacher I've had of anything - and I say that as a person who does a lot of teaching and even teaches teachers.
As a very embarrassed 38 year old beginner, Adam guided me through a ridiculously ambitious first drumming project, performing with and for my friends at my 40th birthday party! He is exceptionally enthusiastic about drumming, and brings with him a really broad knowledge that makes learning with him feel like solid music education rather than just learning some techniques and pieces.
Adam is very adaptable to what is happening in the lessons and in the life of the learner, and is sensitive to what is working and what might be uncomfortable. He is excellent at setting the stage for learning and makes the environment really comfortable and safe. I felt taken seriously as someone trying really hard, but we also laughed a lot too!
If it weren't that we now live in different cities, I'd still be enjoying my regular lessons with Adam.I'm so grateful to Adam for the impact he's had on my son's love of playing the drums! He made learning the drums fun and engaging from the start, helping him gain confidence and improve his skills so quickly. With Adam's support, my son received a distinction in his Grade 3 exam and, very recently, also passed his Grade 5 exam! Something we never thought possible so soon. A real testament to Adam's excellent teaching and encouragement. Adam's passion for music is contagious, and the range of genres covered in the lessons has greatly expanded my son's musical understanding. An amazing teacher!
Adam is a fantastic teacher. He taught our daughter drums for a couple of years and his passion for music was infectious - she loved her lessons and it's really helped her enjoy her music.
Adam is a friendly, attentive tutor who engages really well with his students. He has a great way of sparking students’ interest in the instrument and making them excited to learn. He also brings a wealth of skills and experience to his teaching. My son has had drum lessons with Adam for four years since he was nine years old and passed his first exam with Distinction, a testament to Adam’s dedication. His encouragement, patience, and passion for music made a lasting impact. Adam is truly special, an exceptional tutor and one of a kind.
I had drum lessons with Adam until he moved regions (I would have definitely continued them otherwise) and could not recommend him enough.
Starting a new instrument, especially as an adult, felt very daunting for me but Adam instantly put me at ease and continued to do so. Adam is an extremely kind, patient and encouraging teacher who has a clear passion for teaching and music. If you’re thinking about giving the drums a go, do it and definitely work with Adam!View more recommendations
