About Adam

I’m a friendly, outgoing tutor who loves of all things science and mathematics, with special emphasis on biology and living organisms. I will ask you a lot of questions to stimulate a discussion of the topics that we cover, to try and engage your critical thinking skills and deepen your understanding of content beyond the level of the textbook. We will also have progress review discussions every 3/4 lessons which will give you the chance to talk about how you’re feeling regarding the new content and my teaching, so I can adjust my teaching style to fit your preferences. In addition, we will have content tests regularly to review your progress quantitatively, and improve your exam preparation.

My experience:
I have four years of 1-on-1 and small group tutoring experience teaching science and maths, with references available upon request. One of my most recent students just started an Economics course with Imperial College London, after achieving A*AA at A level in Maths, Chemistry, and Economics.

My method:
I’m a strong believer in collaborative Socratic teaching, which emphasises testing students’ understanding of complex topics through asking questions designed to break the topic down to its simplest concepts and then building it back up. This method of teaching is common across medical and law schools, particularly in the US, but has wide applicability within Science teaching due to its power in revealing gaps in knowledge or misunderstood concepts.

My belief:
Everybody is capable of understanding science and mathematics - issues in understanding generally don’t arise from a lack of ability, but from inadequate or inappropriate teaching methodology. Each student has their own preferences for learning new information, and will respond differently to the format the information is presented in (eg. Lecture, video, discussion, worksheet/problem-solving, etc..). Due to how our education systems work, teachers lack the time necessary to intimately understand each student’s learning style/needs in a classroom setting. The benefit of private or small group tutoring is that it allows the teacher to understand the student’s learning requirements and adjust their lesson plans accordingly, which is something that any good tutor should do. I always aim to get to know my student’s preferences with regards to their learning, as I believe it is essential to providing them with high value education.

My typical lesson/student:
Typically I teach lessons of 1-2 hours in length. I am often capable of providing multiple lessons to a student within a single week if desired, although this cannot always be guaranteed. I usually teach GCSE/A-level Science (Biology/Chemistry/Physics*) students, but am happy to help Biochemistry/Biomedical Sciences undergraduates with their studies as well.

*NB I do not offer A-level Physics tuition yet but plan to be able to soon.
